Shrinking side stand

Having added gsxr rear and raised ride height via dogbones it has resulted in the inevitable problem of the side stand being too short. Just looking at it makes me nervous that a strong breeze will push it over!
I have looked at the mod in the files section and like its reversibility, but for me the subtlyty of the original is compromised in lieu of 'glam rockification'. 
My wondering is if there is an alternate route that anyone has tried. I didn't want to bolt on rubber chunks to the foot as Frankenstein bolts all over the shop looks cheap IMO. 
I am not a welder, so will ask with a degree of apprehension around the answers I may get! Can it not be welded longer?

I have seen it done on later sidestands but these tend to be hollow tube affairs to which a length of threaded bar is inserted and then fillet welded over, ground down, sanded to a finish then sprayed.

Any thoughts or advice welcome! Anyone know how our stands are made (they look like they have cast or something as there appears to be a really faint seam line down the middle)

  G'day nurse, I cut my stand about 50mm above the foot and welded in a piece of 12mm mild steel roundbar of the required length. I did this about a year ago and from my fast fading memory, I think I used a stainless steel welding electrode. When it's all painted, it's hard to see the extension. The sidestand appears to be made from cast steel so a low hydrogen electrode could also be used. You could also preheat and post heat the stand to achieve stronger welds but I didn't bother and mine has lasted 12 months so far.

Hi Nurse,

I welded a piece of tube under the foot with a washer on the bottom to extend the stand.
I used general purpose welding rods and its been fine for about 2 years now.

Thanks Pete, I do like the idea of keeping it looking as original as possible. If u cut it at 50mm did it not push the sidestand 'nubbin' quite far back. Did it not make putting the stand down tricky as the foot peg gets in the way?!  I was wondering if I Could add the length just above the foot itself.  Do u think it may be too thin there?   How much length did u add in total then Pete?

The Jon Cain mod is rarely seen, but it answers the question about what to do with the side stand after raising the rear of the bike.

  I added about 30mm. I've just had a look and remembered that I also cut the "nubbin"off and re-welded it back on so it sits close to the same position as it was previous to the extension. I can't see any reason why you couldn't cut it just above the foot. It would save the extra welding of re-attatching the nubbin. I cut it at the point I did because it was the same diameter as the roundbar I had on hand.

Well Pete you were bang on! Not that I doubted you for a second!

Sorry i havnt followed up post this earlier but i have been super busy and the weather has been super crap, so i havent really had the opportunity or motivation to finishe the job, but at last it is done.  Local guy did a super job on the weld, he is also a biker and knew the FJ so was well aware of my keeness to avoid a welded joint that was going to let go and leave Babs lying on the floor!  He addedd 40mm over all i had asked for a little less but having fitted it it seems ok, he siad if it was too much he would happily take a little off.  just as well given how long he took to do it and how much he charged!!!  Anywho.. pics are below

Here is Babs stood on the sidestand, she no longer looks like she is about to fall over in anything more than a 2mph side wind!


Its more of a swollen ankle look than a glam rock thing!!


Also managed to do it without touching the 'nubbin' and strengthened the thin area between the foot plate and the main length of the stand at the same time.

  I did nothing to the side stand after the T'ace mod, it hasn't fallen over yet and its been 8 or 9 years. I just got used to the bike leaning over a bit more than stock.

BTW Nurse thats a bloody nice job you have done, looks stock.

Of the less desirable characteristics of the fj I am really keen to be as true to the original as possible when it comes appearance, no point in messing with a classic!
