84 CLUTCH RESERVOIR SEAL LEAKING

My 84 FJ1100 clutch reservoir seal is leaking, its the flat rectangle one, and I cant seem to find one. Anyone have any tricks? I am not really looking to spend $$ on an aftermarket one since it works good, other then it leaking.

Fits between the master cylinder body and the plate atop it, roughly rectangular?

Obsoleted.  You'll have to pick up a used master and see if the diaphram seal is any good, I'm afraid.

I'm sure you could find one by looking for used, but it'd most likely be cheaper and easier to convert to a different master cylinder.

Two schools of thought. 

1)  Sure, wtf.  If everything works and you're just fixing a leak, just find some anerobic sealer that's ok with being bathed in brake fluid.  It's not a high pressure area there, so it shouldn't much matter.

2)  You're gonna put something that could eventually dissolve or come to bits in your brake master?  And when it plugs a return hole and locks the front end at 80mph, then what?


Personally, I'd be looking for a pair of masters from a different bike, replacing both and gaining lever adjustability in the process.  You don't have to go to the 14mm master unless you want a longer throw (read, more control at the lever) on the brakes, but there's no reason to not gain adjustability.

Its on the clutch not the brake. How easy is it installing one from another bike?

Takes longer to bleed than it does to swap the parts.

A plugged return on the clutch side will just strand you if it goes all at once, or burn clutches up if it goes slowly.  Why risk it?

NO!.... If it leaks, you ruin the plastic, not just the paint, the plastic, too!  Go to ebay and find a couple newer masters that you like, and that have adjustable levers, it'll be a LOT cheaper.

While on the subject....the clutch on my 86 is engaging as soon as I release the lever a twitch.  Any way to get it engage a little later..I'm worried if it is fully releasing.  Don't want to burn something out.   Got a brand new slave and new fluid throughout.

A month ago or so I was looking for a clutch MC seal [84 1100] and the Yamaha guy told me that there are still 4 of them in the system around the country [USA]at a couple of dealers.  Apparantly a Yamaha dealer can access the entire dealers system and search for a part anywhere.  Maybe you can still get one.

One other thing.  If you overfill the resevoir and then put the cap on, it will leak no matter how good the seal is. You did not say if it just started leaking without doing anything to it or had you topped off or bled the system.  In any case, resevoir should be filled to 1/2 at the maximum, then put cap on. I filled mine more than 1/2 and had leaking no matter what I did .  Only when I reduced the level to 1/2 or less did the leaking go away.
