hello im in Central IL and have recently bought a 1986 FJ1200 for my girlfriend who will soon be riding motorcycles with me (i currently ride a 2003 Hayabusa). when i bought this i knew that is would need a little work, and have since got it up and "running". the bike was in good cosmetic and mechanical condition, was used 2 years ago for a iron butt ride, then unfortunately the owner hurt himself and being a touch over "senior" decide it was now time to get rid of it.

since that event, the bike sat with unstabilized gas. the carbs where full of paste and orange crud. i cleaned/rebuilt the carbs with Randys rebuild kits which where amazing!

since then i have noticed that the stock airbox is a pain in the ass, and have decided the route of UNI Pods for ease of working and tuning/future maintinance.

atm with the rebuild kits I'm at bone stock jetting and have read thoroughly threw the carb files and others recommended jetting settings, including ANDYB who seems to live in close proximity to me.

pertaining the the getting
1986 fj1200
ignition advancer?
4-2-2 Supertrap with what appears to be 8 disks
UNI pods

2nd clip from the top (3 being stock)
stock pilot 40's
stock air 155
mains mikuni 115 (stocking being 112.5)? i see some people are using 117.5 or even 122.5
idle screw somewhere between 2+-4 turns

pertaining to the main jet, what would you recommend as a starter jetsize?

I'm sure others will also reply, but the only change I'd make to what you've listed there would be to move the needle clip to #3 or maybe #4 (from the top) as a starting point.  Everything else should be pretty close, though you might want to increase the mj to that 117.5 after you've tried it all out and done some plug chops.

BTW  I hope your GF has some previous motorcycle experience.  The FJ is a pretty big, heavy, fast bike to start with.

thanks for the advice! unfortunetly she hes not had motorcycle experience and this is her 1st bike! i could not get her talked into something else of reasonable size.
it was this or a R6, or a honda Fireblade..... so after talking about it we decided to go with the cheaper of the bunch as the bike was 1k$

now if only we could get the title issues worked out!

little update!

i got the UNI duals installed easily, and tweaked the jetting.

4th from top clip
3 turns out
stock pilot
115 main
stock air
stock float height

the now drives fairly good, decently smooth. still notice a little off idle dead spot, by 2k'ish it seems to be gone. no smell of fuel, starts right up.

good enough for now! now onto the next issues!

1. Rear caliper was seized so it it now removed, need to figure out how to get the pistons out the clean it good.....
2.  on press of the starter button, bike will  turn over SLOW "ERRRR ERRRR". top pressing, press again and instant start up, no slow or anything
3. i see the lights get brighter with revving! is that due to voltage regulation or the stock wiring and i need to make a harness?
4. any ideas what to do with a HORRIBLE corrodid stock gas tank filler lock cover thing...its horrible!

1. Leave the caliper connected to the brake line and get one piston out at a time and clean and replace before getting the other one out. Hold the piston that will be left in place with an old brake pad or something and some vise grips on the caliper body, then pump out the other piston with the brake lever. Clean and replace, i'd replace the seals aswell, and then repeat the procedure for the other piston. Don't try to pump out both pistons at once, good chance that they'll meet in the middle of the gap left by the pads
2. Take the starter motor out and clean the carbon build up from the brushes and comutator. If that don't help, i don't know.
3. That's normal, and shows that the alternator and relevant components are doing their job.
4. Clean it or get a replacement.  :sarcastic:
