Hey guys,
I've got my stock of new solid state regulators available for the FJ1100 & FJ1200 with the Nippon-Denso alternators. I installed one in my personal 85 FJ1100 last night, and made a how-to video on the installation process. This was mainly to have the details available on my website with the parts, but I figured I'd post it up here and hopefully it will help some of you wondering how to replace your regulator. Randy @ RPM Performance has the regulators on the shelf and available. They come with all the hardware necessary and installation instructions, everything you need! You can do it in about 20 minutes, but allow up to an hour if you've never looked underneath the cover on the alternator before, just to be safe.

Sure Pat, glad to help. I was planning on installing my regulator as soon as I had them in stock anyways, as my original was failing, and I was getting sick of having to leave the bike on the battery tender all the time. Figured I might as well make a video while I'm at it doing the install. It's pretty easy, and at the low price I'm making them available for I hope people will start replacing them as a maintenance item now, rather than wait til they fail and strand you somewhere!

Hey Evan, a few questions:

Does the regulator mount isolate the positive side from the negative?  Seems like the red and black should not know each other?

Do we need to be careful to not dribble solder and accidently make a connection from the positive (red wire) lead to the case?  Some of us may not be very good with a soldering iron, even if we're just removing solder (of course I'm not talking about me, um just looking out for others, yeah, that's it).

Solder wick...... Simple product and it works great.   http://www.all-spec.com/products/80-2-5.html?gclid=CKiKyLq6x68CFWvktgodynrdaQ   Copper braid that you lay over the solder you want to remove and put the iron on top, solder wicks into the braid and you have a clean, empty pad to work with.

The red & black leads are internally isolated. If you mount them as I showed in the video, there will be no chance of contact and you'll be fine. Be careful with the red wire that is already attached via a ring terminal though, it is hot with battery voltage.  Also, I don't think you really need to worry about the soldering part. All your doing is heating up the solder pads to be able to gently pry out the old regulator. You just want them hot enough to flow the solder and allow the regulator pins to slip out. You could use solderwick, but it is really unnecessary. Those connections for the original regulator are pretty much isolated from the rest of the regulator mount, so I wouldn't worry about them being able to contact the case.
