Cylinder head to downpipe gasket query.

I bought some gaskets to seal the cylinder head to downpipes. The original ones were like doughnuts, the replacement ones are some copper faced composite. My question is; One side is flat, the other side has a small raised radius, I would guess that this raised side, is meant to face outwards from the cylinder head?

This isn't on the3 FJ, but my Yamaha XJ900S Diversion.
