I'm trying to bring an 86 fj1200 back to life. it's only got 10400 miles on it. But its been sitting for10 years. I fogged the cylinders and took the cam cover off and put a few drops of oil on each lobe. Left the spark plugs out before I turned it over the first time. every thing went good no strange noises. So I put the carbs on and started it. It sounded good no noises. So I ran it through a few heat cycles. Every thing seemed good. So I I got a GSXR1000 front end and GSXR rear wheel and parts. Cleaned up the carbs. And put them back on and started it up. All of asudden It starts pumping oil out of the crank breather!!! Ive got to assume a ring gave on one of the cylinders. Unless any body knows of anything else that could cause this? I don't have the adapter to fit compressin tester so I'll have to make one out of a spark plug.

So I 'll have to rebuild the engine. I've never had to do this. Don't know were to start. What will it cost? What do I need to get, and were is the best place to get the parts I need. Anything I should do. To make the Fj better (last longer)while I'm at it. I plan on keeping her A LLLOOONNG time.

I also have Crashed 87 california version. I was thinking I would see if the engine was good and swap it in . But its been sitting since it when it was crashed in 88. So other than what I did with the 86 is there any thing I should have done before turning it over? Also what was different on the california version? Any thing internal on engine?

Oh yeah I got both bikes from a friend for $600. After bugging him for years to get it out and ride it. Ive already got a additional $1000 into front end and wheels :flag_of_truce:

Slow down, you do not hear it all that often that the near bullet proof FJ motor needs rebuilding.

I do not know what may have caused this, unless you had way to much oil, but others may well.

Don't just go tearing into it until others have had a chance to chime in.

Welcome here by the way.

Did you top off the oil prior firing it up? Possibly when cold or on the side stand?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Is the oil 10 years old, or did you change it.  Could the carbs have leaked a tank full of fuel into the case?

Sounds like too much oil in the crankcase.

This is what I'm leaning towards.... wouldn't be able to pump oil out the breather unless there's way too much in the crankcase, I would think.

+3..... too much of something in the crankcase... either oil or an oil/ fuel combo.

easy enough to drain the case and see.

KOokaloo!

Cleaned the carbs, stuck a float, filled the motor with fuel?  Totally possible.  Get that oil outta there and put some fresh in!

If it hasn't been run but a little since it was sitting, half the time a good proper thrashing of the motor will clear things up some.  Don't give up hope just yet!

Thanks for getting back to me every body.  I work nights 7pm to 7am. and working lots of O.T. 6-7 nights a week. No I didn't add any oil since the last 4 times I ran it. I didn't think of gas filling the crank case. It makes sense that the float could be stuck and fill the cylinder.  But being a four stroke would the gas get past the rings that easy? I sure hope that is the case. I made an adaptor for compression tester out of one of the spark plugs this morning. If I can get out of bed early enough. I'll go down and test the compression. I can't wait to get her back on the street. An 86 FJ1200 was the first bike I ever owned. Put 14,000 miles on it in 2 1/2 months and totalled it out. When a guy crashed in front of me going into a corner @ 135 mph.
I still would like to know the difference between the cali version and regular FJ1200.
Thanks for all the help

The Kalifornia version wants to lean left all the time...      :bomb:

AFAIK, it's just the smog equipment.

I was hoping some one would know what the smog equipment consisted of. If it was easy to eliminate.

I just did an engine swap with a motor that had been sitting -- it blew a bunch of smoke out to but the more it ran the less the smoke.  I did the same thing you did lubing it up prior to starting.  As I ran mine more and more decreased till no more.  Hopefully you will experience the same.

If not and you choose new motor.... go with the 87.  Swapping motors is pretty easy.

The Calif editions consist of a charcoal vapor recovery system.
Have you seen the online microfishe?

Why would you want to remove the system?
It's non-intrusive and does not affect your bike's performance in any way.

So, don't worry about it, you have your hands full sorting out other issues with your bike.

If anything, take out your lean pilot jets and replace them with #40 pilots for cooler running.

Well us SoCal folks are glad you constrained yourself. Others have said that the California edition has had their tailpipe holes reamed out.

If there's smoke, there must be fire...    :pardon:
