Hi, My Names Tony. I'm new to the Forum but have riden my 92 FJ for 20 years

I'm from East Gippsland, Victoria. My wife and I have a B & B on the coast.
I'm looking forward to reading and taking part in some interesting posts.
My FJ ran out of fuel today, without warning. I'm not sure of the fault but have pulled the reserve switch out as my first port of call.
I can't find any info on how the fuel system (Guage, sender, reserve switch) works. Can any one shed some light on what's gone wrong?

So, i take it that the fuel gauge was working, or should i say not but showing fuel as ok?
And the pump must have been working or fuel wouldn't have got to the carbs.
So i reckon the reserve switch was/is faulty aswell, and must have been "on".
You didn't accidently switch it on did you?

And another point, i suppose if you've ridden your bike for 20 years there must come a point when the fuel runs out.

Does your FJ still have the flapper in the gas cap?

lots of things could have happened..... fuel pump, fuel pump relay, reserve switch  etc.


have you verified that the gas tank was indeed empty>?

Interestingly, this is the first time in 115000 Klms that the system has failed me. I've pulled the Reseve switch out and all I have to do now is find my multimeter to test it.
The reseve switch was "on" as their was no warning that the fuel was low.

Hi Frank, I was KOokalooing very nicely when the bike ran out of fuel. There was not a drop to be found.

If you find that there actually was fuel in the tank, go to the home page here and type 'flapper' into the search box in the upper right corner. 

You'll find all kinds of posts explaining what it is, and what to do about it.

the reserve switch should stay in the off position until necessary to turn the reserve on.


the sending unit opens the ground to the fuel pump once fuel level gets low.... the reserve switch (in the on position)
by- passes the open circuit so the bike will run on until you are empty (as you found)

First, don't google "flapper" without safesearch turned ON.  You're welcome.

Second, read here.  The flappers are the orange things.  That's for an 86, but yours shouldn't be too terribly different.

The flapper typically is NOT a problem with fuel-pump ('88 and up) models, I've heard of very few, if any, having the need for a flap-ectomy...

Hey Tony welcome aboard glad to see u still have the bike haven't heard from u in ages, pity u couldn't get up here in Feb when Arnie was here for the rally was very nice w/e. A lot of the old Aussie list are here to 

:dash2:M8 there's a big round thing next to the speedo with an E and a F when the Tank is full the needle points to the F when its empty it points to the E, when its pointing to the E it means put fuel in me please or I will stop

Welcome Tony, Always great to see another Aussie. Yeah Baldy`s spot on - ya missed a great weekend in feb but there`s another on March 16th next year - a green date for all Macs. 
How did ya reserve switch check out?
