Rectifier Test Table

Hello:

I have been going through some of the electrics on my FJs. I pulled down the corrected rectifier test table from the Files section, and have checked both of the rectifiers. My test results are exactly opposite of what the corrected table shows that they are supposed to be if it is a "good" test. I thought okay, they're both bad, but found something in my Clymer's repair manual that caught my eye. It states that: "Each set of measurements must be high with the ohmmeter connected one way and low with the ohm meter leads reversed." And this is what I've found on my tests. However, the tables clearly indicate that the tests are taken in a certain direction (polarity-wise), and I followed that, but as I state above, my results are inverted from what the table shows, but are consistent with "high in one direction, and low in the other."

I suspect that the direction has to do with diodes?

Has anyone else run across these results when doing this test and referencing the table from the Files section?

I plan on doing a full-blown test of the charging systems when I get the bikes running, but thought if I have them all apart for other maintenance, I could do the tests above to determine if I need a rectifier repair up-front before I do the dynamic tests.

Thanks.

A rectifier IS a set of diodes.
In the case of the FJ and most motorcycles, it is a three-phase full-wave rectifier which has a total of 6 diodes.
The problem you're seeing with polarity is that the + probe on your multimeter is actually the negative pole of the battery within the meter.  Don't worry about this.
If your test shows a "short" (or very close to that) in one direction, and "open" (or multi meg ohm) in the other direction, your rectifier is OK.
Continue with your troubleshooting.  You've passed this part of the test.

Arnie:

Thanks for the feedback. I thought that it was simple, and glad to hear no bad parts too!
