Thanks! Option one tossed in the bin, options two and three are stock 86' rotors. Steve (Moparman) have you measured your rotors for any useable life?
And Dads_FJ has rotors at 7+mm offering enough life from now till past the rally.

What do you guys want for a set?

Mark-- I have not measured anything but I think they would be ok -- as the one bike only has 22k -- It won't be long now --- engine seems to work and once I drop it out and paint I know I will be eager to put it in my 86.... maybe within 2-3 weeks complete.  Once I am ready maybe come down -- help me install and then we can take out the hours work for all the parts..

I work for beer so the offer sounds good. The roads are quite nice in your nick of the woods as well.

I will let you guys know when I go to put it in as I do have lots of beer-- it doesn't look too bad a job -- you don't even have to remove the top fairing.  I figure I will gain a good time frame once I remove the first one -- then once the motor is ready -- have the other one ready to drop so all we will have to do is put the new motor in and if all goes well .....

There will be 3-4  RED and Whites heading to Palomar....( I included Mike in this as well .... may Terry too)

Relax Monkeyman.

Uncork a zin or uncap a torpedo and revisit Dads FJ's and Arnie's posts.

FZR rotor standerd thickness 4 mm.
89-93 FJ   "              "         5 mm.
Max wear for either .5 mm.

Hein.

Hein, I think you might have these backwards? I just mic'd a set of rotors I have that came off from an 89 FJ wheel and I am getting just less than 3.5mm where the pads run.( I guess these are under spec.) I measured 4mm on the outer edge and inside portion of the rotor were the pads never touch. They are 298mm diameter as well. My manual says wear limit is 3.5mm so this confirms that I am actually measuring an FJ rotor. Maybe the FZR rotor is a bit thicker as it is also a bit larger in diameter.
Anywho...Mark, if you want these, to get you by until you find a better set, you are welcome to them. I put a 3.5" 87 FZR wheel on my 86 last year and now the 120/60/17 tire fits much better.

Perhaps I'm confused, but doesn't Mark need rotors for '84-'87?  hope so 'cause that's what I sent him.  Mark, got your radio on?

Hi Jake , Now I'm as confused as you.

Just measured up two sets of discs for my 93 FJ

Oem rotors 5mm.
Aftermarketr rotors 5mm.

Now it gets confusing.
GYSM 1988 fj1200 supplement min thickness 3.5mm. makes 4.mm. discs sound correct.
GYSM later manual min thickness 4.5mm. makes 5.mm. sound correct
Clymer manual original 4mm. thickness making min of 3.5mm. sound correct.
Thank christ I can't find my Haynes manual or there would be more confusion

87-88 FZR GYSM manual 4mm. standard thickness for rotors.

Well, that should make things as clear as mud.

Hein.
What do you mean, you don't have a lathe?

Arnie

Check the disk itself.
Min thickness is stamped or cast into the disk.

All disks I've seen had min of 0.5mm less than new.

All the comments on this thread support that wear limit.

Arnie

I just got back from a very nice ride so I have a good excuse to be off air. I am upgrading to 89 forks and Blue dots. So I am not sure if 86/87 rotors will work or not. Clearly the 89 series rotors will work. At least I have time and not in some mad panic to slap it all back together. Thank you everyone for your input and help. Now we just need to clear up this little bit of confusion.

'89 and up rotors are what you need, the ones that came on the 17" wheel....

Hi Hein. I just checked my Haynes...it says 4mm (3.5mm min) same as my Clymer. My GYSM says same thing for 89-90, and 91-93, 4.0mm with 3.5mm min. My GYSM is a CycleHippie version from Ebay that a fellow member sent me a few years back, so who knows how accurate it is. It appears to be scanned from original hard copy of GYSM. : :scratch_one-s_head:

Hi Arnie. I looked very close but don't see any stamped numbers on rotor.

At least everything seems to agree with the max wear limit of 0.5mm. :good2:
