fairing-intake scoops on side

Removing the intake/scoops that are held on by the 2 plastic rivets, they got broketed and I need to find a less expensive alternative than my local dealer at $6.50 apiece. [ total of four needed ] Even he suggested to look somewhere else.  These are the rivets that lock and unlock with a push of the center plastic pin. Anyone got that figured out??

I stocked up early in life when I realized that they wouldn't last too long.  But they look similar to re-useable plastic rivets that are used in the auto industry.

Maybe a trip to the local auto parts store would find something equivalent?

You could try a company called Auveco. They carry all types of auto fasteners, everything you could imagine. Google it to see if there is a distributor near you. Good luck.

Hi:

I picked up the below from a local NAPA store and used them on a VFR that I owned that used the same type (FJ's) of pins to hold its plastic panels on. Same situation, stockers were pricey.

NAPA has a good variety of them, and they also have ones that are similar to the stockers. However, you may need to Dremel or drill out the hole size slightly on the panels to get the proper fit. Not a big deal for the savings that are realized.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that somehow I won't be able to live the brake shim thing down too easy. That is, unless I come up with something better in the future. And that is quite possible considering the work that I have remaining on my FJ's!

P.S. I plan on removing the brake shims on my '87 too. The jury is still out! :-)

go to your local auto wrecker and they are in the door panels of a geo metro ...

I used a well nut and allen screw, like used on some windshields. You can still access the screw with a ball-allen wrench at an angle.

I think whoever invented them is a genius.  They're cheap and available at hardware stores, I use them all over my my TDM - hell I'd use them to hold on my front axle if I could.
