Changed diaphragms in my carby's today

Have change diaphragms in my 89 fj 1200 carbys today with second hand set which are not full of pin holes.Long story short,my slides had flat bottoms this set has arched bottoms.With old ones which i fixed pin holes in with liquid tape.engine would start up and run fine with very little warming up.Now its seems to love the choke for way longer before it will run like it should,why?misses and carries on like it's not going to run,cold.warmed up runs fine.Darrel M.

Sounds lean to me.  Were the needles the same and in the same groove in both sets of siides?
You may need to richen the idle mixture with the adjuster screw, change pilot jets, or raise the needle 1/2 or a full clip to make it run right again.
Others who deserve "carb guru" tag may be able to tell you the difference the arched base of the slides makes, I don't know.

Flat bottom slides only came in the 1100 and they use a different emulsion tube. The arched bottom slide use the emulsion tube with a raised brass portion to assist in drawing fuel out of the needle circuit.

You can see the raised portion in the photo of this carb kit; 1200 carb kit
(you can click the enlarge tab and you can see what I am referring to more clearly.)

It is the part at the top of the left side in this photo. Where you see the cut out stop at the base is how tall the flat bottom slide emulsion tubes are.

The needles are a different beast as well. The 1100 needles are really short since the slide is flat and the needle is lower.

Another thing, the 89 FJ used a fuel pump and a single inlet fuel supply. Based on our emails about the carb kits, it sounds like you have a set of 84 fj1100 carbs.

I am glad I did not sent the kits yet, I will send the 86 kit which will have the correct emulsion tube and needle for the arched slides and the proper sized needle & seats as well.

Thanks Randy,now you have me wondering if i have fj100 engine or 1200.Here is first 3 letters stamped on ID tag 3CV.My carbys the way i bought engine came set up with flat slides,112.5jet,40jet and 155 which i have changed nothing but slides from flat with needles to arched with needles that came with secondhand slides.So what you are saying if i change the needles over things will be back to normal.Darrel M.

Look at the very front of the engine, at the center between the headers at the head gasket parting line there will be the displacement number.

I believe the 1100 reads, "1088", the 1200 is "1188" and the 1300 is "1250".

That is the easiest way to determine what you have.

You will need to change the emulsion tubes to get it to run properly which are included in the kits I am sending you.

3CV is a 88-90 lump. Do your carbs have one fuel line going into it between #2&3 cylinders or two lines bropping in between #1&2 and 3&4?

Hi,2 lines dropping in between 1+2 and 3+4.

Are you still running the fuel pump?  89 tank and petcock?
