The fairing on my '84 is in bad shape and I'm looking to replace it with a solid one this winter.  They seem to be hard to find in good shape, so in the interest of expanding my search options;  Is it difficult to fit later fairings onto an 1100?  I imagine that the fairing mounting frames might be different, but if I get a later FJ1200 fairing and frame, will it pretty much bolt onto the '84?

hi mate, very do,able as i did it myself , also have an 84 , couldnt find a fairing at all, so ended up with an 88/89 fiberglass replica, fitment was fairly easy, i kept the main bracket the headlight, and fairing attach to, and welded new brackets with nuts underneath it for the bottom mounts,  they also need mounting points from the frame for the side  support, i used just a mild steel 2mm plate or so, with a nut welded on, nothing fancy as it cant be seen,  as for the back mounting points they were a perfect match, ,   that should take care of it falling off, im did it in a few hours, with a home mig and 5$ in parts  , few things that you may change or keep, the original 84 fuses in the fairing, you could just leave them as is mount them in the fairing pocket or whatever you feel like, i shifted them and used an aftermarket fuse holder to behing the left side cover, and the choke could be let as is, but seeing as there is a panel for it to mount behind a binned the bar choke and at the time made the crapiest choke mounting bracket across the top frame rail,  , also cut off the top original fairingmounts, as i think they were in the way,  as for mirror mounts they can be re,welded to the top mounts as long as you didnt just cut them too short :rofl2: , so thats pretty much it mate, if you get stuck just ask the questions    , cheers rod    , oh ps is it fitted yet :pardon:

Man, that's good info.  Thanks.  It turns out that I won't be needing it, though.  At least not yet.  I just scored a only-slightly-cracked '84 fairing on the dreaded auction site (are we allowed to name the auction site that must not be named on this forum?)
It will need to be painted and have a bit of repair work done, but it's MUCH better than the smashed to bits one that I'm using now.

Sure thing.  I bought this bike last fall in a pretty bad state.  I got it out of the shop this spring and have been riding the hell out of it all year.  It's original paint, but it was crashed a while back and really messed up some stuff.  It's all cosmetic damage, but I'd really like to fix it up a bit more.
I've already started collecting the parts I'll need for the GSXR rear wheel swap, 17" front wheel swap, blue spot calipers and a radial M/C, and the new fairing.
It will emerge from the shop as a much improved motorcycle in the spring.
