Running in a new engine

So I got the new bike today, will post pictures tomorrow. And apart from the owners manual being a waste of time(the english is poor, grammatically poor) I am concerned about the running in of the new motor. I wan to follow the manual but it seems to be very bad at describing how to run it in.

The way the manual describes seems very gentle and doesnt really seem fruitful for the bike. I want to run it in properly, somebody auggested this article to me but http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
But with this being a Chinese import(the crappy quality stuff) I wasnt so sure if this would be a good idea. Anybody got good tips for running in a new motor?

So far the bike is slow, I mean way slow. BUT it handles SOOOO nicely, leaned it over so low I though the bike would fall over but it kept its line and went quite alright. So far only put 10 kms on the clock(not gonna call em kookaloos yet)

After seeing and reading some run in techniques and how they affect the life of a motorcycle I sure am glad I never had to run the FJ in...

first and foremost, CHANGE OUT THE OIL!!!.....i dunno what kindof tar/veggie oil/whale sperm they put in these motors, but you would have better luck with the engine with a known-quality oil.......the oil they ship these with breaks down so fast, that after a few hours, you would swear it has been in there since man first invented the wheel!!!!

as far as break in goes, as a rule of thumb, i tell folks on these bikes to let them warm up thoroughly, then, for the first 500 miles(1000 km) or so ,dont baby it, but dont ride it like you stole it either...the engine needs to be loaded/stressed a certain ammount for everything to seat in, but not too excessively, as everything is still
"finding its place" so to speak......

now a race motor,...thats another story altogether!!

btw, do some reading on mototuneusa.com   ....this guy is good, and his porting ideas actually DO make good power....done it in a few fzr 600 heads and it really helps the upper-midrange without giving up anything on top end.....

+ 50 on ninja,s advice ,a gentle whipping is the way to go , rev but not too long ,and don't just hold a steady speed , like highway cruising , take the back roads , 
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

keep it away from the redline for the first 500 mi.

warm it up before ya pound it.

change the oil now.

load it up and wind it up and decelerate , works real good with 2up on a small bike. that will set the rings in a hurry.

change oil and let it rip. :dance2:

Thanks guys, ive put a few more kms in and it already feels a little less stiff, I'll definitely change the oil..

As promised some pics..still loving how nice and tidy and easy it is to put around corners though I am going super slow :biggrin:

LOL, kickstarter maybe though I have never used it, it has a perfectly fine electric start. But Im glad it has a backup kick start for just in case..

So far I have loved riding the bike. Its by no means very fast but its got enough toot to get me out of trouble in slower speeds..

I dont know if I have developed muscles from riding the FJ but this bike feels sooooo much lighter.(it is actually heavier than the first 125 I owned but I can lift it a lot easier, much easier to manouver around..This week I'll be putting it away though and being back on the FJ. so a great speed rush is to be expected again :biggrin:

And with the upcoming xmas bonus thats supposed to come up as well as a few other things I can give the FJ some well deserved attention

I only parked them that close so I could get the cover over both bikes, still have to get another cover :hang1: and a helmet and a and a and a and a etc... Well I actually got the helmet but I have to wait for the order to come in. Nothing fancy but way better than a plastic helmet..I guess when I get it I will have to learn not to throw my helmet on the ground when I get angry... By the way I finally figured out how to enlarge avatars, you have a lovely paint job on your FJ :good2:

allways something to buy mate, if you get a new helmet usually the more you spent the better it should be,go for function and fit, before fancy looking cheap colours,  ,oh thanks for the effie comment , think that was the day i put her back together, i didnt paint her ,was a mate that does cheap 2pak paint work, may do it myself next time, not bad for a toyota shade with a small amount of blue pearl that sparkles in the sun

Definitely a great colour that I could never get bored of..

As for the helmet, nothing fancy, plain glossy black a step up from plastic and comes with a lot more saftey ratings. I still get what I pay for and since no fancy paint job more saftey. Its fits nice and snug and is way more comfortable and offers more visibility than my current lid. The dealer wouldnt let me test ride it so I cant say anything for wind noise and ventilation but it looks better than mine, easier to breath without fogging up and also the earplugs will help for noise..

Plus with the current state of my lid...

never even heard of the brand,anything as long as its black,mines matt ,what brand is your new one mate, have to be better than the icecream bucket you have now ,cost you much  (popcorn)

Lol to be honest I can remember the brand sadly enough, its been a week since I looked at the helmet at the dealer and have had many things on my mind since, will take a look on my way home today and check again

and na doesnt cost me much. The boost is a cheapass plastic brand(either chinese or local) I paid 600 zar for it.(under 100 US$). The new one is still a lot cheaper than the really fancy lids. at 1500 zar(just over/under 200 US$) But like I said its miles better. I think its some kind of carbon mix, quite light and comfy, will post a pic when I take it

On the other hand yesterday I had the bike on 400 odd kooks in the morning(still not kookaloos but getting close) and on my way home I took it to the local track(its on the way home if i take the backroads). Considering it still needs to run in properly I took it for a few gentle laps around the track for the fun of it...
It sure looks tiny on the track


All in all was some good fun and very addictive. I so badly wnated to open up and go flat out.. well atleast its good practise for when I try on the FJ..
