I had a 89 FJ for a few years but foolishly sold it about 7 years ago.  I have found an 87 with lots of miles(38K) but it appears that the seller knows his stuff. Hopefully going to go look and probably buy it tomorrow.

If I get it bought I'll be sure to post some pictures.

I've been through a few bikes starting in 1976 till now (kind of off and on as military movements allowed) and the 89 FJ was by far my favorite
?1975? Yamaha RD200
???? Honda CB500T
1976 Kawasaki KZ1000
???? Honda CBX
Some kind of hunk of crap KZ1000LTD
???? BMW R100GS
1989 FJ1200
?1976? Yamaha RD400
1977 Yamaha DT400

good luck on your search friend.

IMO 38K on an FJ is just getting broken in good.  :good2:

KOokaloo!

FJTillDeath

Good on ya for realising your mistake :sarcastic:

Na just kidding, hope the FJ you get is a keeper(then again arent they all).

38k is way low for a 20 sumin old bike :good2: and they are easyish to work on, plus with guys like Randy there are a wealth of parts to obtain
Life behind bars - is actually quite thrilling

So, I went ahead and bought the '87 FJ1200.  It is Kawasaki "burnt orange",,,, not sure about it,,, color isn't bad but paint job is older and a "little rough".
"This one has Burnt Orange paint job (Kawasaki Z1000 color), Lockhart Full Lower Fairing, Corbin Seat, Vance+Hines SS2r exhaust, Dynajet Stage 3 kit, K+N pod filters, FZR 17" wheels front and back with full floating front rotors, CBR1000 mirrors, fresh Barnett Kevlar clutch w/double spring, brand new battery (2 weeks old), and brand new rear brake pads."

It came with the original seat and a box of spare parts (instrument cluster, some pegs and foot controls, a couple of CBR600 shocks and other misc stuff.

PO told me it needs a valve adjustment (he gave the the "tool") and a "tune up" (he said needs carbs "swabbed out" and synched).  I guess I'll pick up a manual and give it the "old college try".

I'm guessing I'll have some questions.  I better get my donation sent in.

Orange you say??? Hein did you sell your FJ?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Welcome aboard bugboy and congrats on finding a rare orange version. No, monkeyman, its not mine. As self apointed treasurer for life of the orange FJ owners ass. I now have the opportunity to double the membership. The post for president is still vacant.    Hein
What do you mean, you don't have a lathe?

bugboy

I will only be eligible until this one gets a new coat of paint on it! The current paint is a little rough and has some stickers/decals I'm not crazy about.  Valves and tune-up,,,,, then look at the "pretty" stuff.

way to go ,  :good2:

You have to post some pictures before you make changes, before and after documentation.

Then I would forever be known as "that guy with the orange FJ with red tires and pink (oh yeah, I forgot to tell you) crankcase covers". I can take some "ribbing" but that would border on pyschological abuse.
I won't even mention the hula girl and "Hawaiian Punch" decals on the tail!

I still ride it in the daylight in public though!

It is getting some kind of cosmetic work this winter.  I'm toying with the idea of a white pearl paint with no or minimal decals (i.e. Yamaha or FJ1200, Ain't nobody's business what I'm riding) or flat black rattle can after roughing up the existing paint.

First, I need to check valve adjustment and get it idling right. Then sort out suspension as the previous owner was 300 lbs and I'm 160 lbs.  It's riding a little stiff for me.

So,
New tires
Valve check/adjust
Carbs/tune-up
Supsenion adjust
Cosmetic fixes

That should keep me busy.

One question if you don't mind.  The bike has a DynoJet Stage 3 with K&N pods.  Are Randy's unipods a lot better than the K&Ns?

The UNI pods trap more dirt, some prior K&N users found the carbs dirty and switched over. I plan to remove my stock air box and install UNI's.

Not interested in selling at this time.  I've got "bigger fish to fry" right now.
