Thanks for the info guys.
As I'm trying to source the parts needed for the 17" YZF rear wheel conversion as well, I'll have time to decide over the winter which shock I'll put on.

Anxious to hear what Randy is up to though......

Mark, keep us informed as to what Penske has to say.

Kevin,

Why are you going with the YZF rear?  The GSXR is so much easier and I'm going to bet that the parts are much more ready available.  Not to mention no machining necessary and the end result is the same, a 17"x5.5" rear wheel.

Just curious,

Hi CraigO.
I considered the GSXR conversion and may still do that if I can't source the YZF parts (and which ever is the cheapest option). The GSXR conversion requires the wheel, caliper and stay, master cylinder, and the brake line. It also requires welding if I want to keep the center stand, which I do. The YZF does require some machine shop time, but I have a buddy (an AME) that does this stuff in his spare time. The YZF conversion lets me keep all my rear OE brake components (I have the blue dots up front) which have recent pads, and I know that nothing is seized up. Either way I'll be happy just to go to radial tires.

Kevin,

No need to change the rear master cylinder with the GSXR conversion.  You also do not need to weld anything, just find an anchor point for the brake torque arm.

That said, you'll do what you want to do.

Kevin,

The GSXR wheel does not require welding.  Open the link below and download the attachment.

89 FJ1200 saphire.blu owned 8-9 years.  By far the most satisfying of them all. Constant tinkering got me the best bike you could ever want.

racerman_27410

to be honest i was at first looking for the YZF600 rear wheel and forks before i did my FZ1 conversion..... couldnt find the yzf parts but i did have to push that wrecked FZ1 out of my way while i was looking and that;s what got me thinking.

i guess what i'm saying is to be open to different possibilities, you never know when something good can happen.

I guess this thread is now about the wheel swap.

Here is a link to the wheel you need.  Ask if he has the whole real wheel assy as well as the brake parts.  That's what I did and got everything for $150 plus shipping.

Worth a shot???

Hey Craigo.
Sorry so slow to reply, didn't see it until now.
Anyways, I did see this ad on ebay, and another one as well. I sent queries to the sellers to see if they might have other parts as well, but I haven't heard back as of yet. Just today, I found a new local guy, http://www.rpm-cycle.com/  who sells "used, late model sport bike parts", and he's only 20 minutes down the road from me! I called him, and he thinks he might have what I need, he's going to call me back on Monday.
If he does have the stuff, great. I can even inspect before I buy, and no shipping charges.
Again, thanks for the heads up on this mod, it's going to save some grief, time and money.
I owe you a beer or two!

Kevin, have a look at my pics here:

mainly the last 8 or so.

No underslung caliper, no welding, no loss of centre stand.

Mix of GSXR wheel, and Katana brake/torque arm.

Bill.
Sold it!

DB Cooper

Hey Bill.
It never occured to me to put the caliper up top. It even looks like the OE FJ brake line will fit.
I'm still waiting on a local motorcycle salvage guy to get back to me to tell me if he has the parts I need, he says he's pretty sure he does.
I'm anxious to get the parts in my hands so I can start this project. What year is your bike Bill? Also, what size of tire do you run? Any clearance problems?
Thanks
Kevin

The GSXR wheel swap is so easy my mom could do it.You do need the brake line and for the spacers no problem getting them from a bike shop my 91 wheel didnt have them.Good luck and my bike has a Bridgestone batlac on it with about a 1/8 of clearence on chain.Wheel lucks great on the FJ.
