Thanks David, I found a couple :good2:

Got a bit ahead of myself with the 17 inc rear swap  but glad you brought it to my attention about the front being more of a neccessity. With quite a bit being involved(if I use all the suggestions you mentioned) it may take me a while to get all the parts(ebay is my new friend , money is not :shout:)

But the motor work is way more expensive and something I hope to do much later in life. As you said suspension is key. I didnt think about the front being a problem as I had heard so many people commenting about how great the rear swap was, needless to say I hadnt taken into account they had 17inc fronts. I think my main problem would be my shock - really old and soft

My maintenance list comes first. The oil leaks are a priority before I even go near a track or some spirited riding. Otherwise if it works out too expensiv to upgrade the 85 I'll pick up a 1200 post '90. There are a few around.. but these are all future plans :good2:
Life behind bars - is actually quite thrilling

as i did the front 17" swap on my 84 years before finding this forum  i used an 89 wheel and forks, would it be worth changing to a later front ? , , its worth the effort jesse, better choice of tyres and handling is improved heaps
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

I've got the same '89 front wheel setup on my '85.  Still amazed at the transformation it made to the handling compared to the stock 16 inch wheel.

It's fine for me, but others have said the 3.0 inch FJ rim pinches the front tire and prefer a later model 3.5 inch rim.  Most of those upgrades lose the stock speedometer.  I believe the FZR wheel will retain the speedo, but I haven't really looked into it as I'm still more than satisfied with what I've got.

Hola
120/70/17 modern tyres are designed for a 3,5" rim. A 110/70/17 suits better the 3" rim
Change the front rim and the difference is amazing, more when braking hard
FZR 1000 GĂ©nesis 1987-88 rim fits straight on. Exup rim fit with a bearings and spacer change, or fit the Exup front axel, fitting a helicoil to the FJ left fork vase to admit the new axel thread

Alf is correct with the tire sizes.. I have the 90 with the original rim 3" . I had the 120-70-17 on it and I definitely noticed the pinching.  The AVON site shows for tire sizes -- 120-70-17 will fit 3 - 3.5 inch rim.  The 110-7-17 fits 2.75 -3 inch rim.  So both sizes will work but you can see that with the 120 and 3 inch rim you are on the losing end of the size chart but the 110 your rim is on the larger end.  The 120 did not look correct on the 3in rim -- the profile was extreme at the edges.

From my experience I much prefer the 110 I have now as far as fit/handling etc.  So if you go with an 89 yr FJ front end you can keep the 3 inch rim if you want just go with the 110.
