Hey everyone,

Has anyone done an airbox modification?  i.e. K&N filter with drilling out the stock air box ... this was a modification that worked very well on my FZR1000 ... i had to clean the filter a whole lot less than when i used the unifilter setup.  Or does this bike respond better to a unifilter arrangement?

any help would be greatly appreciate

Cheers :hi:

Steve....yes I have, but now use Dual-pod Uni filters. It works just fine, but not really necessary unless you have gone to stage 3 jetting and aftermarket exhaust.

I still have the moded airbox if you would rather not destroy your own.

I installed a UNI airbox insert and swiss-cheesed the airbox cover.... it made a definite difference for the better. I haven't ridden an FJ with pods, so I couldn't say if it's any better or worse, but it works well.

thks

installed the k&n today going out for a ride tomorrow will see how it works and wether i need to re jet ,,,, seems to be running really rich right now.  I hope the better air flow will help even it out a bit.  then will come the air box mod.

Thks Harvy for the offer ... I actually have a second air box on hand as the previous owner was going to do the same thing before he sold the bike to me.

will keep you fellas posted

Cheers

I'm considering doing a similar mod and was just wondering how things went? Did your bike run any leaner, was there a significant difference in HP and did you notice and difference in fuel mileage (better or worse)?

One of the perks of pod filters is that you don't have to dick around with the airbox if you ever want to work on the thing.  There's enough guys with pods that you can probably get near perfect on the jetting on the first try, too.

I suppose if you're concerned about low end torque it makes sense, but at that point you wouldn't mod the box at all.  Seems like the worst of both worlds to me.  (And my 90 on stock gearing with pods was able to easily lift the front wheel from as low as 3k rpm by bouncing the throttle, which I consider satisfying amounts of low rpm power!)

Thanks Andy... I was actually considering just replacing the stock air filter with a K&N and acquiring a second air box cover so I could swiss cheese it.

I recently added a V&H Supersport 4 into 1 and after raising the stock needles 1 notch, I'm very happy with the improvement in power and response. I was just wondering if this simple mod would be noticeable at all either better or worse. If it's going to make my fuel mileage any worse, then I'll just leave it as is.

Cheers!

I did not have my stock airbox end on my 85, so I made a flat alum plate that locks the k&n in place but leaves the whole end of the airbox open before the filter but totally sealed from the filter on.
Trimmed to match the airbox shape and painted black, it gives it the best of both before pods come into play
