Cylinder Head carb intake face cleaning?

Hi, everyone.

Just replacing o-rings on the intake tubes & I'm having trouble cleaning the faces.

Nothing serious, just some brown gunk that's probably been there for years, but I don't wanna damage the faces at all, & carb cleaner isn't doing the job. (see pic below)

Is there any way to safely clean the faces without damaging anything? Steel wool?

Try WD 40 and for desperately cases I use paint solvent or paint thinner

Thanks Alf, I'll give it a try.

I've been scrubbing w/ a microfiber cloth & carb cleaner, and it's sort of working, but not completely.

I use a sharpening stone to clean gasket surfaces.  Just oil it up and use a slow careful circular motion over the metal.  Should take it off and leave a nice shiny surface.

Scotchbrite.  Plug the hole really well first though and clean up carefully, as you'll lose bits of abrasive from it.  Or use sandpaper on a block, a stone, or whatever.  Cosmetics aren't going to make or break a good seal though, if you can't feel a ledge where the mark is, don't worry about it.

Try some polish or rubbing compound.
