that is exactly the way mine behaves...when it grabs again it is a hard yank for me.... it lets go and then will put me back in the seat when it grabs again..the rpms dont climb because they dont have time to...its only ...for half a second or less......I assum that if it were the clutch letting go it would not grab again like that....?

I aquired yesterday the possible donor..actually a nice 86 fj1200 with a full fairing, the 3 givi cases and the wingrack, corbin seat (red trim will have to be changed), new V&H 4 into 1 , new avon(?) tires(less than 5000kms), .....has oil leak in base gasket and he bought a kawi c-14 new so he gave me the bike for $1200 for everything. he also threw in a couple boxes of parts! I went through them last night and jumpins! he must be rich to let all that go...(ie: set of coils with wires unopened- which I priced at $240 ea.   I was hoping to sell the bike certified for $1000 when im done with it...I still am ....I think...space is the only problem oh and ridiculousness!
So its going to be a busy fall and winter including getting some nice rides in.
yes , Jason, that is an excellent way to have a quick look...
wow, the gears and shift forks can be done in the bike?  is that if you take off the head and block?
thanks guys for all the input...i guess its going to be the old process of elimination? start with the clutch?

Fred

I suppose it could get bent bent bad enough to pop out of gear and stay that way, but the classic symptom is popping  in and out of 2nd gear under load. The bent fork doesn't engage the gear completely and eventually the dogs get rounded off and slip out of the slots when under load. Its a good idea to have the dogs undercut while you have everything apart.
