I have a 1990 Yamaha Fj 1200. The battery isn't being properly charged. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that I need a whole new Alternator/Generator (not sure what its considered). Is there anyway that I can just replace whatever part is bad. If so can anyone help me understand the tests I need to do to figure it out. Any advice would be wonderful.

Hey, welcome to the group. I had exactly the same problem when I got my FJ. Turned out it was the regulator (after thinking that it was the generator as well). Do a search in the maintenance section, there are quite a few threads on after market regulators. I used a Bosch RE55, works a charm, though Randy has a nice one available on his website as well. Happy fixing :)
