this project is officially now in the "one day" category!
when I have workshop space and the time (and another bike) to play with the rejetting etc (or the $ to pay someone else to do it for me but where's the fun in that!)

Nice job, discourage the poor guy why don't you, David....  :)

Nah no discouragement at all...
just the realisation that this is a bit above my current resources! (time, knowledge, shed and $)

....so please help... why does the pod keep popping off the carbs? Nothing is visible wrong with the carbs or the pod

Hello James, sorry to jump in late, I'm currently out of town and just checking in via Starbuck's hot spots....

Again...Thank you David, I would like to copy and paste your UniPod velocity vs. air flow example into our File section if that is ok with you.
Over the years, you have patiently explained this to us, over and over, and I still manage to screw it up....This being saved in the File section, I'll know where to go (carb section) to look up your explanation.

Back to James.  Do the UniPod installation. Sooner or later you will have to remove your carbs for service (sometimes several times) and the UniPods will help that task. Now, one reason why the right side does not fit is that your motor mounts are knackered. It's easy to see if you look at the UniPods in relation to the air box tabs on the side frame rails.
So... Put new motor mounts in, and your engine will now be centered in the frame, and the UniPods will fit..... Cheers!  Pat
Look at Randy's pictures below:

Here's where Randy discusses the motor mount issue:  http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=3234.msg34572#msg34572

you may also want to clean the pod to carb mating lips with simple green or alcohol to remove any oil that may be present.

the pods stay on the carbs much better with clean lips and not so much tension on the clamps.

Sorry,
I too have been out of town since Friday and I am just getting caught up. The UNI instructions specifically say, "If your filter has a rubber mount flange, be sure to clean the surface free of oil."

They even put the yellow caution strip in with each filter with the specifics of the importance of cleaning the oil from the "rubber snout & flange". If you did not get either of these two items in either one of your air filters, let me know and I can mail them to you.

I use a small amount of brake cleaner and clean both the rubber of the filter and the flange of the carb.

Secondly, to not over tighten the clamp, it compresses the rubber and forces the filter off of the carb. Tighten and pull the back of the filter away from the carb body. When the filter doesn't slip off anymore, give it another 1/4 turn or so and the will stay on.

Hey Pat,
Feel free to copy/paste/save anything you think is worthwhile.  I consider any information I put on here in the public domain.
