I've been riding for quite a few years (dang, lookin' like 40 counting my formative off-road ones!) - snagged an '84 FJ1100 with 14K on the clock the other day - picking it up tomorrow.  Looking forward to a long term relationship.  Trading an '05 Vstar 650 showing 10K on the clock for it (first cruiser - we all make mistakes) - looking forward to bending some corners this weekend!
Yeah - the handle - StatDoc - I hold a PhD in statistics - not the most exciting field in the world but I can advise that gambling odds always favor the house!

Cheers

Dammit, I was going to visit the casino on Friday, too...

Welcome, Steve!

Dan Filetti

Welcome here Steve.

Hey, be aware, the early FJ's had fairly frequent issues with 2nd gear, the shift forks get bent from sloppy shifting and fixing it requires engine-out case-splitting.  Many here have done the job themselves, so it's not a show stopper, but be aware.  I tell you this as 14K miles seems very low, leading me to wonder, for no particular reason, if the bike was parked once the issue surfaced? -or for some other reason.

To check for the issue, run the bike high into the RPM range in second gear, make sure it does not pop out of gear, or skip in-then-out.  Again, it's not what I would call a show-stopper, but it should factored into purchase price.

Post some pics once you've picked it up.

Again, welcome here!

Dan

Live hardy, or go home.

G'Day Steve, welcome.
A statistician, eh?
That is fantastic, you are just the man we've been looking for.
It's about reversion to the mean and how it applies to "Safety Camera" justification.
I do hope you'll hang around, there's plenty to chat about.

Welcome Steve, it's great to have another '84 in the group. Where's your home?
As Dan said, we do have a soft 2nd gear shift fork and if you experience your bike jumping out of 2nd gear don't worry. We will help you. Just the way these guys help me on my '84. I think the USA version '84's Stormy Red and Quartz Silver happen to be the best color combo. of the lot.....

Cheers!  Pat

Welcome Steve, nice to see more of the old ones poping up. My first FJ is an 84 with 33K on it now. I do have the in/out problem. It is an easy fix I'm told. Being an ex Yamaha, Honda & Kawasaki mechanic I don't think there's much to fret about. Good luck with your rocket!

Ok - banged into 2nd at 9K with no issues so it would appear that I don't (yet) have the gear box issues.  Very familiar with "class 900" Saabs which were (in)famous for their gearbox issues (one reason a beloved '87 SPG no longer occupies my garage) -

I suppose I'll run full synthetic in my FJ - hope to see a lot more miles on her - damn nice bike

Anyone else in South Central PA?  I'm about half way between York and Gettysburg - pretty serious HD country (lots of bars close together and some very straight roads may influence this) - personally grew up near Philly - good number of thrashed "cafe" and sport bikes in my past - one (perhaps two) cruisers (never more quoth the raven, never more).

As for gambling - if you can enjoy it cheers!@@  I got chucked from all AC casino's in '80 'cause I could keep track of 5 decks of cards in my head - sometimes life even sucks when you're an undergraduate student!

Cheers

Re: gambling.  The odds definitely favor the player if you're doing things right.  However, cheating will get you thrown out if not arrested.

(My wife's an MPH, does a ton of stat stuff and swears at SPSS frequently!)

Welcome to the club.  Be cautious of ever mentioning oil or tires, they're more volatile around here than religion and politics :)
