Are you ready for this?????? Yes I have made the FZ1 front fork conversion and kept the speedo drive intact. What??????? Yes it is a fact.........beyond my wildest aspirations !!!!!!!!!! Frank(Moore)......??  You may want to have a gander at this !!!!!!! I have successfully completed your FZ1 front fork mod .........with one exception............. NO DOWNSIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!! I was able to mill out enough of the fork of the 2002 front fork and shave off enough of the 97 THUNDERACE speedo assembly to allow the OEM speedo drive to work. Removed the rubber oil seal and the spacer from the 02 front fork......milled out 7mm from the inside of the fork and slid it in !!!!!!!!!  LOL .....It is a thing of beauty.....I will post the results.........but I am extremely happy right now as I am sure you can tell.....

Pictures, walkthroughs, etc!  That's a good mod if you can retain the speedo!

There I fixed it for you.

i used to think that losing the stock speedo was a downside to the FZ1 fork conversion but now that i have my Acewell digital dash with dual trip meters, temp ,voltage, fuel , average and max speed along with riding and total time i dont miss the stock speedo one little bit.

i can see where it could be beneficial to someone else though.

post up some pics  :good2:

Waiting for the pictures and process!!!   I wanted to try this on my USD R1 forks but even if you can get the gap at the fork leg the radial brakes interfere with the cable routing....

Lets see those shots!

Hey Kev, I saw your Gallery pictures on the lower leg mod to get the 17mm T-Ace speedo drive to fit.
I'm worried that you removed too much material on that fork leg....

Wow.
I don't think that I'd like to ride it on the roads we go on up in Nthn Ca.

Wow- the machining looks pretty clean and nice.  I see that it is recessed on the inner side and you cut away some material to allow the cable but the stock design of the fork seems intact above and below the axle where the most stress would happen....

Once it's all bolted together the recess won't matter much (strength wise) as there will be flush contact across the length of the axle with the speedo drive inserted and the axle tightened up. I would think its probably not much weaker...

The canal made for the cable was the risky part and I think you did a great job- looks minimal material removed.  I was wondering how much of the recessing on the fork you could eliminate by reducing the width of the speedo drive instead?  I have an extra speedo drive I got a hold of to modify and see where the limits are for grinding it narrower.

Looking forward to hearing how it all works for you!

O.K, sweet then, good mod.
I'm no machinist, to me as a layman, it looked a bit suss.

Yeah- I was thinking last night that I should be careful not to give reckless advice!  Bottom line is unless you stress tested it there is not way to know.  In my mind it would take a pretty big front end hit to break the axle out of the fork- even with the reduced material.  If that were to happen the biggest worry would be the front end impact itself not the axle... so?  Would this mod allow additional flex or movement during use that would make the bike perform differently?  I don't think so since its solid once its all tightened on..

I can tell you this- I thought long and hard about digging into the R1 fork bottoms and trying to thin the speedo drive to keep my mod easy and retain a functional speedo....  Now I am thinking about it again..!

Looking forward to hearing more canDman!
