Hey....thx guys for the interest.......Pat...always nice to hear you weigh in on the subject.....initially when we measured everything...the stock set up was 160 mm inside to inside (the 2 front forks) but with the the speedo hub assembly.......brought it out to 180mm....so we needed to remove 20mm........at first we were going to scrub the whole idea........we didn't want to remove too much material from the fork.......so after alot of discussion and debate it was agreed that if we remove 12mm from the wheel and 1mm from the face of the speedo we would only need to mill into the fork a total of 7mm. The other thing that was neccessary was to take the cone shape out of the speedo hub........so if you look closely at the before and after view of the hub you will see the square shape rather than the cone shape.....then the cut was so precise that I needed to use a screw driver to dig it out and a some force to get it in........but it is very snug......and I am enclined to agree with Tim.........everything feels very tight ......I am going to say that if there was strength lost at all......I am thinking no more than 5-10% .......now that all parts are machined and ready......I will make the conversions as soon as I get a window......Thanks again for all your interest and I will post new photos as they become available.....Kev

Hey Kev, I saw your Gallery pictures on the lower leg mod to get the 17mm T-Ace speedo drive to fit.
I'm worried that you removed too much material on that fork leg....

Wow.
I don't think that I'd like to ride it on the roads we go on up in Nthn Ca.

I machined a 89 FZR 1000 front wheel to except a FJ front wheel bearings. Some folks thought that was to much metal removed from the hub, but after a year and a half it has held up great. All you can do is try it and either prove people wrong or right.

Thx for the encouragement Buddy....... :praising:......it's nice when people have nice things to say......even Paddy....although.....he didn't say anything "nice" at least expressed his concern with class and care.........which I appreciate...........but like you said......there's only one way to find out.........drive up and ride those wiley roads of northern Canada.........

You do not have to go all the way to Canada to try your mod out come to western North Carolina. There are just as good of roads around here.

LOL........I live in Canada....Toronto actually...........I guess.....some of our members don't realize that Ca. doesn't just stand for California. I was being a bit fascicious which was aimed at them. I understand that a little ribbing is quite acceptable here........ :blum1:. Now as far as a ride down to N.C.......sounds amazing....will accept that invite and maybe sooner than you think...... :good2: Kev

CanD is the name of my bike because I am Canadian.....and the ole girl has the same colours as candycain.........and she is a sweet ride :good2:......no offence was taken by anything you said but I appreciate your gesture and your good nature. I wish everyone was the same. Someone posted a comment here that could be considered either arrogant or ignorant....take your pick. Some pepole don't feel very good about themselves unless they criticize someone else.......but that individual certainly isn't you. I would love to explore your neck of the woods one day..the journey is more fun than the road itself......FJ....."Fantastic Journey"

Wow- the machining looks pretty clean and nice.  I see that it is recessed on the inner side and you cut away some material to allow the cable but the stock design of the fork seems intact above and below the axle where the most stress would happen....

Once it's all bolted together the recess won't matter much (strength wise) as there will be flush contact across the length of the axle with the speedo drive inserted and the axle tightened up. I would think its probably not much weaker...

The canal made for the cable was the risky part and I think you did a great job- looks minimal material removed.  I was wondering how much of the recessing on the fork you could eliminate by reducing the width of the speedo drive instead?  I have an extra speedo drive I got a hold of to modify and see where the limits are for grinding it narrower.

Looking forward to hearing how it all works for you!

Tim....just wanted to thank you for your great support....................my hope was to show others another option than losing there stock speedo. I will certainly keep you in the lupe..as things progress....and one day I will take the trek down to the west coast line of beautiful California.....ventured down there   on a plane...but haven't     done the road trip yet...and anytime you r up this side of the border...look me up....Kev
