New to the FJ, and can't wait to see what it's got

So, I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago to find out some questions about an FJ that I was considering trading a bike that I just restored for.  I had just finished restoring a 82 Suzuki GS1100L with 3400 original miles on it but decided that the cruiser wasn't for me just yet.  I ran across someone that was interested in trading his 92 FJ1200 ABS for my bike even and eventually did it.  Come to find out if you read my posts, the chain broke on the FJ prior to me gettin it, and took out everything on the lower crank case (including the bullpin, dont ask...I was kind of retarded the morning I posted that after 13 hours of night shift).  Anyway, after a lot of help from members and suggestions I think that I have found a set of cases from an air cooled XJR1250 that I can swap out the broken cases with.  Have been told that it will be an even swap and hope that it goes uneventfully, although Ive never really worked on a big yamaha before so this should prove interesting.  The bike otherwise in great shape and I can't WAIT to find out what all the "buzz" is about.  Speaking of Buzz I think that i am going to swap out the original sprockets for an 18front 39 rear combo with the 530 chain.  Ive been told that sets the bike up just about perfectly.  I am always open to suggestions and my home garage is ALWAYS open to anyone that is in the area and needs to tinker or talk bikes.

G'Day mate, welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you're a man who knows what he likes.
I've not been up to New Hampshire, I've been to Boston and Fall River, it's a nice part of the world.
Hmmm, I may take you up on that offer.
Goffstown, eh?

I'll have to see if I still have any pics of the big Zuke on my phone.  I just placed the order for the cases and should have them by Monday.  This weekend I'm going to try to drop the motor out and from the looks, I dont think that its going to be super complicated.  Although, I may need to consult the internet a few times to find out the best way to do it.  I just wish that I had a nice bike lift to get it up to my height.  I'll post the progress and probably a bunch of questions along the way.  I'm still not entirely sure if I want to do the case swap by myself but I do have someone that I could pay to do it for me once the motor is out.  Glad to be here and can't WAIT to get out and maybe do some riding with people in the area that have an FJ.

Thanks for pointing that out Dan! LOL!

Actually, from where I was standing, the road to my back was closed to all traffic due to road construction, and me and wife were taking a look at the progress, as this is our normal route to work..hence the two helmets.

I can't wait to finally meet you at a rally, I'm sure we'll have alot to talk about! :dash2:  :flag_of_truce:

Filetti hasn't made an FJ Rally since he ate that scrapple in Boone...

This is true.  I've done a number of my own mini-rallies with buddies, (at least 2/ year) since then.  I will surely overlap one such event with an FJ rally sometime in the future, but getting my all-too-self-important yet, knucklehead friends to agree on ANY date, much less an FJ Rally date, is no small task. Not that it has helped yet, but I invariably start with proposing the date of an FJ rally, and to date, it has gotten shot down by one person or another.

We got close this year, only a week off of the spring rally.  It will happen, with any luck, in the near future.
If by chance a rally I attend overlaps with one you do Leon, I'll buy you a beer.   :flag_of_truce:

By the way: Scrapple Rocks!

I know exactly how it is.  I have my own knuckleheads here and the same travails.  That's why the rallies are so beautiful.. all you have to do is take care of yourself and show up, your friends will be here.  You don't have to organize them or drive them with a cattle prod to make a decision and commit to a date.

My locals are on their own.  If they get their shit together and agree on something I'll go, but I'm out of the cat herding business.

SlowOldGuy

I hear ya on gettting people to agree to a date.

Whenever I "arrange" a trip, I'll specify the dates the make sure that I have my trailer and room.  If I can get a firm committment from another rider, then I'll agree to share.  Otherwise, everyone else is on their own.  I do not make reservations for others, neither do I rely on them for support, transportation or anything else.

I encourage others to make arrangements on a 1 or 2 traveller basis and keep it simple.  Trying to arrange transportation, accomodations, and trailers for a group of people is too much of a pain.  The more people in on the planning, the more conflicts.  I don't even want to try to travel together because someone will be late and I hate waiting for someone to get their $hit together at the last minute.

My best ride ever was last October.  Weather was absolutely incredible.  Only myself and a friend went.  No massive planning, we just rode.  It's one of those trips I'll always remember.
