I know its sad but I really dont know what year FJ i have. the tag at the dealership said 1988, but when I looked on the internet the 1100 was only made 1984 to 1986 and the bike looked a lot like a 1985 model so I thought it was that. then I saw the 1984 model and it looks a lot like that as well. Can anybody tell me exactly what year mine is??

Hope that helps and thanks for any help ye i know I am probably a tard :dash2:

FJ111200

Well 36Y says it's a FJ1100, 83-86. The registration document might be a clue as to the actual year, but i don't think anything significant changed on the 1100 during it's production run.
I notice that from the pictures it's got FZR400 front brake calipers from 1990. And the top fairing has been altered so that there are no air scoops.

FJTillDeath

FZR 400 front brake calipers?? on an 1100 um is that better or worse?

FJ111200

Better.  4 piston calipers instead of 2.
Well they look like FZR from here.  There isn't a mounting bracket is there to suggest that they are from an '88 onwards FJ1200?

EDIT. Oh hang on a minute. Looks like 2 piston caliper on the fiche.  http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-fzr400a-1990_model9585/partslist/E-04.html

I honestly could not tell you when I asked the dealership they said everuthing apart from the exhaust was stock but then they also told me it was an 88 reg. :pardon: From my own inspection of the bike there appear to be brand new forks on it so the brakes may \have the mounting bracket. This is my first FJ and I havent seen another 1 up close to compare so as far as I know I think everything thats on it is oem...

Well that's a 16inch front wheel from an 1100, the 17inch wheels came in from '88 on with the 3CV 12's. Those front discs are the 1100 ones which are a bit smaller that the 3CV but the same as the 1TX 1200's.
So maybe the later 3CV 1200 forks you've got there are using the later 4 piston calipers on early discs.
I suppose there must be some part of the brake pads which aren't biting on the discs?
Some guru will be along soon.

FJTillDeath

Na theres no biting, none that I can pick up and that VIN decoder would be very helpful if i could find the 17 digit number thanks anyway when I find it I will use it

:yahoo:  Shit man, hope your brakes work. I said i suppose there must be some part of the brake pads which aren't biting, meaning that the larger later model 1200 have longer pads and so with the smaller 1100 discs they could be missing the disc in parts when they bite.

The Frame VIN is on the frame rail that goes around the head tube in the front- not on the head tube like most bikes.  With the bike on the side stand and bars to turned left- look down at the forks from above- on the right side - on one of the round silver frame rails is a 17 digit #.

It has all the classic 84/85 bits like the upper fairing and tail. Maybe someone had a newer year but really liked the 84/85 look. Stranger things have happened to our FJ's.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

So i looked up the forks and saw a little worn out card looking thing but still didnt see a VIN number only a VIN number and some other random numbers but none of them equalled 17 digits. Mind you I couldnt really get a proper look with all the cables in the way. will have another look later on during lunch hour. for the moment I am lost though it very well may be an older model with older parts, all I know is that I wont truly be able to compare until I meet a fellow FJ'er
