So even though I can't really use my right arm, I've begun dismantling the fj.
It was a pretty severe lowside because the subframe is bent and the swingarm might be a lil tweaked.

I'm looking at some parts off ebay and need some help.

Will a 89 or 93 subframe work?
What year clipon will fit? There's an 86 on eBay for $50.
Rear fairing spoiler wingy looking thing. What years of those can I use?

Sadly, the main fairing is cracked pretty badly where it bolts to the windscreen and may not be salvaged. And these fairings are very pricey.
I'll also have to get the whole thing laser measured because it doesn't roll straight.

All this is going to be rather pricey me thinks. Should I just part it out and get something different? I have ny heart set on fixing her though.

Hey Henry... Glad you're doing ok. It's a good sign wanting to get started on your bike. FYI, The compatibility info. I get is from this website: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html
If you look up the year FJ you have, then find the part, then click on the part #, it will pull up a table of all the other years of yamaha's (all models) which share that same part #....Really cool. It saves me a lot of time cross checking part #'s

Yes on the '89 subframe, not sure on the '93 subframe, it's the same part# 21190 but you can see that on the '91/93's the exhaust hanger is on the subframe and on the '89/90's the exhaust is supported by the aluminum side brackets. Perhaps you could make the '91/93 subframe work with hack sawing off the exhaust brackets? Dunno.

Yamaha part " 26122 right and 26121 left is shared by all FJ's, the '86 will work fine.

Yamaha part # Y2165 is shared by all FJ1200's from '86-'93 the only change between years are the colors. The Early '84/85's have a different design.

The '89 FJ fairing shares the same Yamaha part # W2834 as your 1990 FJ fairing, (except paint colors)
I got (what I think) is a very reasonable quote ($400+ ship) from these guys on restoring my '84's fairing using the factory Stormy Red and Quartz Silver colors: http://www.precisionmotorcyclepainting.com/

Your call on the cost vs benefit issue. I personally would hate to see another FJ parted out if it can be saved, but that's just my emotion talking.
I do love my '84, she's been a good steed thru the years...However there's reality.
The business side of Patrick says to not put any more money in this bike. It me tells me to take all the modifications off the bike, then part it out, then buy another low mileage FJ and bolt my modifications on the new FJ. (but that's not gonna happen)
I would not hesitate to buy another FJ because the bike fits me so well. Realistically, it's a better bike than I'm a rider. It's easy to work on, a great value for the dollar invested, and all my fellow FJ'ers are great people. Kinda like a family.

However, that's me and not you.

Henry, watching you ride on Hwy 36, I can easily see where the your riding skills will eventually evolve beyond the capabilities of our beloved FJ's.
It's blasphemous to say this, but perhaps a newer, lighter, more capable bike would suit you better in the long run?
We love our old heavy FJ's, but there are many many good newer bikes out there, which will be a better match for you, along with enhancing your riding skills.
Again your call.

Cheers Henry, heal well young man.  Fr. Paddy

Henry..... I know the feeling of working on the bike with only one good arm working..... did the same after my wreck a few years ago.

I can offer you a '90 sub-frame and tail section, and a '90 swingarm.
Only problem is I'm in Aus and shipping would be the downside of the deal but the only cost to you.

Heal well mate

as much as i would like a newer lighter bike, i dont think its in the cards right now. Besides, i really dont want to part out an FJ if i dont have to. its such a great bike and i'm sure there's plenty of life left in her. if not for me, then for someone else.

Besides, the fj community is great and i wouldnt want to leave!!

my next two bikes will be a ducati st2/st3/st4 and a bmw f650gs/r100gs or r1100gs.  but those will take quite a bit of saving!

I do wonder how much shipping would be from AUS to Ca, USA.

off topic...  You're Alive!  Kind of wondered what was up with you.

If we didn't throw Danny Lewis out for getting something else (twice!), we'd probably keep you, too.     :empathy2:       :bomb:

Hi henry, i could help with your bike if u needed it, depending where u are, im in tas, guessing your on the north island mate :)
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

This is the corner I crashed at.
You can see the gravel right at the apex, i had been riding for a while and now that i replay it, there is a possibility i was a little heavy handed at turn in therefore put a little extra weight on the bars.

and one of these rocks on the right is where i hit with my right side.

and the bike...

Henry, I cringe to see the results of your crash, both you and your bike. I look forward to riding with you again. You put many more miles on than others that attended the WCR, mostly due to your tenacious need and passion to just ride and enjoy the view. Your photos reflect some great vistas. Heal fast, repair the FJ quickly and ride it like you love it.......Oh, don't forget you riding boots, others here will not let you live it down.......
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Henry ok cool, we can help. IMHO that fairing can be saved.
Did you save that broken tab at the right rear of the windscreen mount?  The fairing's ABS material can be welded such that the weld is actually stronger than the surrounding material. Some filler then sanding then primer and paint and clear and you're all fixed.
Yea, your subframe is tweeked, throw it away. How's the tank?

The tank is untouched, just a little dirty. I do have the piece that broke off the fairing on the windshield part. I bought some stuff called plasti-fix which is supposed to work very well. But i think im going to try and have someone with experience repair it.

the swingarm worries me a little because it looks a little bit off. i'm going to loosen all the bolts and re-tighten, then take it to get measured. we'll see.

and here is a pic of my xray. if you look close, you can see the broken ribs too. the broken spinal process's don't show up on there though.

Henry.....just as a guide for the postage costs from Aus.......when I sent my Penske to Bill, it was Aus$106. Postage is calculated on weight and volume. As I think I mentioned to you a while ago, I have a rear subframe, ducktail (with tail light assembly), passenger grab handles, swing arm, rear axle, rear calliper and calliper bracket, and probably a couple of other bits and pieces from a 90. Heck I've even got a frame here if yours is bent. BUT postage would be a killer.
Anyway mate, they are there if you can't find what you need in the US.
