Wont start after long run, until it cools down

After a 10 year plus lay off,  the 86 and I are back on the road for about 2 years now.  Mostly short runs typically 50 mile local canyon stuff.  Maybe a couple of 150 mile days thrown in. Well I've been wondering how I and the bike would fare on a longer run. Been considering doing some touring next season, to the WCR for one. I've trailered to the last two. So today I set off about 9:00 am with the intent of going as long as I could stand. From San Dimas I went to Ventura (So. Cal guys can follow) via the 210 and 118, then north on the 101 to Santa Barbra. I then headed back south. At Carpentaria I refueled and headed inland for a run around Lake Casitas via the 150 and 33. Back south on the 101. At Ventura took the 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) to Marina Del Rey and had lunch.  It was about 1:30. Waited too long I was stinking hungry. Just as I shut the bike off, I noticed a parking spot where I could see the bike better from the restaurant (everybody wants my bike, well you know). But the bike would not restart. I was a little concerned prior to parking because at the fuel stop it was hesitant to turn over, but it did. I assumed it had something to do with a hot engine and I went in to eat. Deal with this later. After lunch it started right up. Whew. I was intending to press on to at least Long Beach to have dinner (drinks) with my wife; she was attending her church's convention there. But decided not to press my luck and heading home, about a 50 mile freeway run. Got home at 3:30 pm. Shut the bike down, tried to restart, nope.  Just like before seem like the starter could not turn against the resistance of the engine. Lights were bright. Waited about an hour, engines spins freely and starts right up.
Anybody familiar with this scenario after a longer run? Since the bike ran well, I am guessing the starter can't take the heat.

i usually just crack the throttle and it will fire right up

KOokaloo!

Havnt had it happen quite like that, just slow to turn over, changed my 2 brush starter to a 4 brush later model one ,suppose to be better torque  , ps my fj is an 84
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

Cracking the throttle that is.

Hey Mike, yea, try cracking the throttle first, if that does not help then give Randy a call, or just check FleaBay for a new XJR1300 starter motor.
A Newer design and a more powerful motor. Frank also has that starter motor on his big block Brutus engine.
When Randy finished my 1349 he tried to use my oem FJ starter, and when it was hot, it would not turn over, until he put the XJR starter in. Problem solved.
Same symptoms as you..

Kudos on the good ride! Yea, 300 miles and your FJ is just getting warmed up.....   Cheers!

Hey Pat,
How dare you move my post to the appropriate location! Wish I continued my ride now. You back in Palm Desert? Hows the weather?
Mike

I had the same problem.

Have you tried retightening the starter bolts? It worked for me.

Sometimes corrosion, dirt goes between the starter and the motor messing with the ground contact.

You can also take the starter out, clean it, possibly put new brushes in, lubricate it as appropriate, and ensure that the wiring connections are solid.  Costs not much, and familiarizes you with the process if a replacement is necessary.  In my case that was all that was necessary when I was having hot start issues.

Mike, my bike occasionally does the same.  I have noticed it only if I immediately try to start it after just turning it off.  If I wait just a minute or so it starts right up.  Its never really cause any major issue so no real troubleshooting on my end has started yet.  Quick things to check is your battery though -- make sure the fluid levels are up and if the battery is more than two years old I would replace it.  Batteries don't like sitting a lot so even with little use their efficiency goes down.

PS for the Above quote -- I had the very same idea during the last rally -- presented to Marsh -- so I am up for that big time -- Make it so LA Mike - Pat

PSS -- Mike I have had to work this weekend  - I almost was able to give up my call but a big problem happened that required 3 persons so working was a must.  Going in again today. ...but we will get a ride in and if your interested in longer rides that is my specialty... I will work out a trip.

The So Cal ride sounds good to me, hope it works out. The summer week ends are filling up.
Steve, Having not heard from you I figured you were out of town or working. Too bad it was work. My original plan for yesterday was to go to Mount Palomar, but with the hot weather I decided to go north. Near the beach it was down right cold in the am (for us So. Cal boys). I sent messag out to Mark, but no response, guess he was busy too.

Thanks to all for advice. What great group you are. Also glad to hear that it is not necessarily an indication of something "serious". I'm a little paranoid of the old bike but starting to regain my confidence in her.

Now to figure out how to post pics, I'm very computer challenged you know.

Mike ,

the no start thing is common on the fj after a ride . do the coil relay mod and you won't have to get a new starter or battery yet.

Hey Markus, the issue is not with the spark or coils, the issue is that the starter motor can not turn over the hot motor.
Still, the coil relay, like the headlight relay, is a good mod.
