are ALL YZF600 forks after 97' the forks of choice...or is there a year ending...such as 1997-2004? etc...will the 2002-03 work?

thanks!

97-05 forks all appear to interchange, as they're all the same part number.

that's a relief!...when I asked the question, I was fixing to pull the trigger on buying some 2003 YZF forks and just wanted to make sure...I did order them so, while you'll may have to tell me how to spell modits?, you will not have to explain it to me!...I got it! :yahoo:

I took note of your answer and found a link where I can compare part #'s, great idea....thanks for your help Andy!

How about the speedo drive? You want a mechanical drive for your FJ. What year did the YZF600 convert over to electric?

Assuming you retain the older spacers and axle, I'd imagine it'd be moot.

A picture of an 03/04 shows the speedo drive coming from the front wheel though, so I think it wasn't electronically calculated until the R6S replaced it.

Yeppers, you're right, microfische shows a mechanical speedo drive on the '04/'05... Nevermind, disregard my ramblings, carry on, as you were, etc... :morning2:

YZF600 forks on a FJ? What are the benefits?  Thanks.
Only a motorcyclist knows why a dog sticks its head out the window of a moving car.

good question Pat!...Andy, when you say "Assuming you retain the older spacers and axle, I'd imagine it'd be moot."...are you saying retaining the FJ axle?....I was thinking the FJ & FYZ axles were different sizes and I was planning on getting FYZ600 frt wheel anyway but I have no clue if I can hook up the FJ speedo correctly to be honest

maybe someone who has done this swap will advise...also, if I use the YZF600 frt wheel should I get the YZF brake rotors, calipers etc, or are there better swap-on part choices that fit from other bikes?

thanks

based solely on what I've read on this forum they are the best improvement or the choice of many in regard to upgrading the FJ front suspension

You want the *entire* YZF600 front end, forks, wheel, spacers, axle, fender, speedo drive, etc.
The YZF600 uses a superior stiffer 17mm front axle (vs. the FJ 15mm oem) but wait, there's more!!
You also get a light weight 17" x 3.5" front rim and bigger 320mm rotors and external fully adjustable (rebound/compression/preload) cartridge forks.

The bitchen cartridge forks alone is worth the price of admission, all the other is just frosting on the cake.... and a very tasty cake!

Pat, I hate to say they still have the 298MM rotors.

I think the saying is, The best damper rod fork is worse than the crappiest cartrage fork and from there it just gets better.

andyb

I just was meaning that if the fork legs themselves are the same but the speedo drive changed, you could use the middle bits from an older YZF to post-date the assembly to an older year.  Isn't necessary as everything should work fine as it sits.

yeah, I thought they were 298mm also is why I was wondering if 320's off anything else would be best choice

IMHO, For street use 298mm rotors with R-1 calipers and a 14mm master cylinder or a radial master cylinder is more than fine.
For a track tool, where you need the extra thermal mass for repeated braking, 320mm is the way to go.
The only draw back on the YZF600 front end swap (again IMHO) are the 41mm stanchion tubes, spindly on a 550lb bike by today's standards.
A FZR or YZF750 USDs would be more rigid, or a 1997 YZF1000 Thunder ace conventional (cartridge) fork which uses the stouter 48mm stanchion tubes.

However, IIRC wasn't Bill was talking about going back to the YZF600 front forks specifically because of the 41mm tubes?
Something about a better feel on the track, than the more rigid front USD's?

it's not hard to get me confused Andy...but what I'm intending to do is put YZF600 forks AND front wheel on my 86' FJ...are you saying the FJ speedo drive cable will hook up to the YZF wheel?....also, I know it would depend on tire size but wondering about speedo accuracy?..thanks
