I never pushed my bike to the highest limits. fj1200 1986 almost stock as possible with aftermarket clutch. What is the most amount of rpm's that can be run with out tearing shit up. I was doing 90 mph last weekend on the parkway and was only keeping up with traffic. Any looking to ride in south jersy let me know, I have the weekends off.

As for how fast these bikes go, an FJ 1100 with stock gearing (17-42 I think) has no problem getting into the low 140's.  I run taller gearing (18-39) and the few times I've lost enough sense of self preservation to run that far up in the numbers my bike has done so without hesitation, even having no issues pushing my heavy ass, the bike and the enormous Givi side cases I have to 147 mph (GPS confirmed, by my friend acting as pace car in his M3) on one occasion.  Granted, it took a while to get up there (and the bike was rock solid), but since I'm not one who makes a habit out of flying down boring, straight roads at go to jail speeds I'll not be repeating another curiosity top speed run anytime soon.

Redline on the 1100s is 9,500, and stock gearing on the earlier bikes (I guess so they could be 1/4 mile monsters, at the cost of rather high RPM's while cruising) was pretty short, so going to a taller gearing is a good idea just for better manners at highway speed.

Stock, I believe the top speed on radar was 145 according to some magazine review.

I wouldn't want to hold it much over 7k for terribly long personally, but if the airflow is good and you're not losing oil (i.e., bad ring seal or the like) you'd be okay to leave it singing pretty hard.  Don't explore past redline and you'll be relatively safe if the motor is otherwise healthy.

The other concern is running out of fuel at those speeds and going lean, due to a wimpy pump, plugged filter, marginal venting, or some other problem.  If it splutters or goes soft, get out of it.

Oh all right, since everybody else is doing it. 7500 in 5th was 140 on the speedo today. 18-38 gearing. I'm thinking the speedo is at least 10% optimistic, but cannot verify with one of those newfangled GPS thingies. If it's on your phone does it dial 911 for you?

My 1100 has GPS'd 146 and I know it has gone faster when I did not have it the gps with me.Thats with stock gearing

Wide open on the FJ, between Atlanta and Augusta @ 5:00am, many years ago, the speedo was showing 158.  This was everything the bike had.  It was surprisingly smooth. Guessing that's +/- 147 actual.

I have seen a FJ motor come out of a bike go into a car. Where it was held between 8-10 rpm's all season long (if not longer). This was aprox. 35 races which includes practices and heat races. Once the motor started getting tired it came out got rebuilt and did it all over again. Remember this is with the motor sideways, so less than great air flow, and with the oil light on so much it had to get disconnected.

there is no rev limiter on a 86 fj only the 1100's had them.

my personal best speed was 155mph verified by chp   I-15 socal  palm desert .
17-41 gears
vh 4-1 pipe
staged carbs
new head work
double clutch spring.

The fj loves to run at 100 all day
nice and stable.

as for the rpms kepp it under 10k

I'm not sure what top speed is on mine. I've had her up to 125mph a coupla times with engine rpm to spare but she gets a lil gutless beyond that. I'm a big dude, 6'2" 250lbs. I don't think she likes pushin me that fast. but yea, all the reviews of the day say 145-147mph

Are you saying only the 1100's have rev limiters? or Just the 86 FJ doesn't have a rev limiter?

Or........................you have never gone high enough to find it on your 86?

We'll be up in West Orange, but I grew up in Warren county (just outside of Port Murray) so I'm pretty familiar with the roads in Hunterdon, Warren, Morris and Sussex counties.  My ride to the ride typically involves me going at least up near New Hope/Lambertville, because the roads down here pretty much suck.  I was just up on Rt 650, and I always try to get in a jog down to Lake Mohawk (I think that's 613, yeah?).  I'm sure I've missed some choice roads up in Sussex though, and I'm always game for a ride.  We'll definitely have to get together for a ride sometime soon.
