Hey all you FJ owners, I am replacing all my front fork seals, new rotors( that i painted red to match) brake pads, and painting my wheel. Ive taken the front tire off, cleaned all that up, brake calipers painted red as well. But i have no clue on how to get to the forks so i can get the new seals in. In much need of help!!! Oh by the way, ive got the bike hanging from my garafe roof! A sight to see all the funny faces from everyone driving by my house!

Remove the fender and assorted crap with it, the wheel, and the calipers.  Each fork leg is held on by a bolt or two at the top and bottom clamp (the bit your handlebars connect to).  Just pull the entire fork out, one leg at a time.

I am in need of this information too. How do we get the old seals out? The new seals in? Should we put more oil in since the have been leaking? If so how do we put the oil in? What are the torque specs on the bolts involved? Anything to be safe with so that the forks stay aligned? Sorry dont mean to jack the thread, but I figured why not add to this one.

Check out this write up. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=1911.0

You won't be drilling out your damper rod, cutting the damper rod adjuster, cutting a new spring spacer, or installing the cartridge emulators, rather just reassembling what you took apart.  But this write up includes the information needed to replace the fork seals and bushings.   It's advised to replace the bushings as part of a seal replacement.

Must say, get a manual.  Any of them would work (GYSM, haynes, clymer) as basically all of this is answered in them.

ok I'm guilty of owning a manual. I have the Clymer. I guess I also like to hear first hand exper rather than only the steps to do it.

Did someone mention skinning a cat?

Any way you do it, it's a job well done...     :diablo:

Just did mine. Take your time don't rush. Its pretty easy, I used the triple clamps to hold my forks in place while I disassembled them. mind the spigot in the bottom of the fork leg. O! and take your time. :good2:

I pulled the forks off when I did mine, one at a time, filled them to the brim with oil after removing the springs, and used a big clamp to compress them slowly.  Shoved the seals right out. :)

Well Ive got everything removed from the bike, and found out that finding the tools for the job are harder than doing the job itself. So with the forks out, Im going to take them to a shop and let them do the job. Cant be but a couple bucks now all the work of getting them out is done. And while there are out I need to replace a valve gasket, and with some research im finding i need to replace my bolt gromets as well? Where do I get them from? Then Im doing chain and sprockets. I need to fix second gear, but it scares me. :shok: Just dont think I can tackle that alone. Yo no say, O P.S. the bike is hanging from my garage ceiling, you should see the looks from everyone who runs/drives by. hahahaha

Where are you located at?  There may be someone within range that can help.

I remember asking the exact same questions about a year ago, before doing mine.  It seemed very intimidating at the time.  But now that I've done it (after reading all the posted instructions and making the special tool) I can say that I could do it again without hesistation.
Do not argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
