Depends on the riding you do... I adore my shinko 003, but unless you're riding on a glued racetrack after a long burnout, you won't think much of it :)

Well while were on topic, what do the guys running 17" x 5.5" rear rims like to wrap them in?

Just installed Dunlop Roadsmarts...

120/70-17 F, and
180/55-17 R

Pretty darned nice, but they are still new.  They came highly regarded for this bike and the stress the front sees from weight + great handling.  I have the Pilot Powers on my Beemer and they are great too, but the tire shop thought the FJ would burn through them too quickly...?

I think I've posted this before,

I consider the 3000 miles I got out of my Roadsmart front tire as "burining through them too quickly."

Not sure what to try next.

Has anyone fitted Avon Roadrider AM26 to an FJ? Both my FJs have Avon Azaro/Storms and I'm happy with then but for the older bike I'm thinking about going back to bias tyres for hopefully more mileage. I do a fair amount of miles and I find I'm only getting 5-6,000 from the radials. Incidentally, looking at my records, I've fitted 15 fronts and 23 rears to my FJs over the years.

Mark-

Have you run this combo?  I wonder because it what I plan next (actually the Road 3, for the rear but close enough) -do you get more consistent wear front to back?

Just wondering.

Pilot Road 2's on my FJ:

120 x 70 x 17 on front
170 x 60 x 17 on rear

20,000km.

I have just replaced the rear with another.  The front is still good.

Bill.
Sold it!

I have read some good reviews on the Dunlop Qualifiers. Thinking of trying a pair. I spend more time turning than slabbing. Not quite a hijack, might help the bloke out choosing tires.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

I still like the Shinko Ravens.

Every bit as good as the Avons I replaced with 'em, and they were pretty good.   :good:

Did I mention that they're really cheap, to boot?

I'm reading about Dunlop Roadsmarts and it sounds like potentially a great fit.  I use the FJ for commute and the occasional twisties ride.  The tire shop pretty much nixxed my PP or PP 2CT thoughts (<3000 miles predicted when I showed my 021 wear) and their strong recommendation was for the Dunlops.  Anyone have experience with these tires?

Frank

+1 on the Roadsmarts!!!  I have a 120/70-17 front and a 170/60-17 rear.  Stick like glue but are not as stable in a straight line as the Michelin I had.  Not that that's a bad thing as I prefer the quicker handling.  I have about 1k miles on them and seem to be wearing just fine.  No cupping on the front and no chicken stripes on the back.  I will buy them as long as they keep making them or something better comes along.

I had a Roadsmart on the front and while happy with the grip it did triangulate with a distinct edge developing at the transition point between the two compounds making the steering progressively heavy. The wear rate was fairly even between the centre and the sides. My current Michelin has the same issue with triangulation and progressively heavier steering AND a line around each tyre which is apparently partial delaminating between the compounds!  The new Conti Attack 2's achieve the "dual compound" effect by applying different amounts of heat during manufacture. Hotter in the centre making it harder, less to the sides.  The idea is a seamless and progressive transition from hardwearing centre to grippy sides.  Independent reviews look good and theory makes sense.  I am about to fit a front and will report back on performance.

Thanks for your input all.
I think i'm going to try running the 180 roadsmart, all I have to do now is fit the rim that will accept such a tyre. Bring on the weekend!

I love a good tyre discussion it's like old ladies arguing about what brand of washing powder they like.
Life's pretty straight without twisties.

wow , just checking posts now .

yes I am running this combo now for the first time . the Idea is the front and rear will wear out at the same time.

I like the pilot powers but the rear burned up before the front. I replaced the rear at 3000 mi and the front went 4000mi.

I will see how long it takes to wear these out but they should wear nice and even . I would rather have the sticky tires than the mileage.

also the michelins fit the rear swingarm with out hitting the chain like the avons and others.
