Stock front tire for the early models is a 120/80-16.  Avon still makes one that fits.

Do you live in Jacksonville, or are you in the Navy down there?

does any brand 120/80-16 fit? or are there any other measurements i have to worry about?

and i live in Jacksonville, but im not in the Navy. been here for 22 years now. why do you ask?

Depends on whether you want to run bias ply or radial tires.  Any 120/80-16 tire should fit.

I've made a few trips to Jacksonville in the last few months to the Naval Air Station.  I'm hoping to be visiting there more often in the future for work.

I've grown fond of the Endorphine Rush hot sauce at Tijuana Flats.  Their Tuesday taco special is quite a deal.

Funny, I was in Jacksonville two days last week on a sales deal.

Small world.

Im aware of the differences between radial vs bias ply but is there any reason why radial isnt elite in the motorcycle world?

I love going to NAS jax, its right down the road from me. My girl can get me on base, i like "tax free" haha

And in all the years ive lived here, ive never been to tiajuana flats, now i have to go try it!

Radials are the best tires in the motorcycle world*, just like in the car world.  Remember that bike is very, very old, and is/was designed for the tires at the time.  Tires have come a long way in the past ten years, nevermind the past 20 or more!  Without  looking it up, I'd guess that the prior owner put that 130 on the front because they were available in some "better" type/brand than the bias stuff (that size iirc was used on the CBR900RR).

Converting to the later front wheel, later front end, aftermarket wheel, or full fork swap should start going through your head around now, incidentally.  There's lots of improvement to be had.

*excluding special purpose tires such as drag slicks, paddle tires, etc.

so i dont have the option of just getting a new tire off the web and getting it put on by a local shop? if i do, can you give me an example of a tire i can use?

im not quite grasping the full picture here, and im not asking to either. i would just like to know what option i have that is easiest and cheapest. I plan to have this bike for a long time and have plenty of time to upgrade parts later.

thanks for all your help guys!

Any tire in the size that it's supposed to have, or in the size that it currently has, will fit.  Actually, any tire that fits that rim will fit (obv?), and there's a bunch that fit.

Avon AV45
Avon AM46
Continental ContiGo
Shinko 712
Bridgestone BT45
Pirelli Sport Demon
Michelin Pilot Activ
Michelin Madcam 100X
Dunlop GT501
IRC DuroTour RS310
Metzler Lasertec
Duro HF918

All have something that fit in those lines.  I'd try bridgestone or avon myself, but it depends on what you want for wear vs grip, etc.  Some are bias, some are radial.

If it helps, I have burned off three sets of Avon AV45 tires off my front and the rear AV46 is ready for new. The Avons worked for me as canyon carvers. I spent today chasing San Dimas Mike up to Crystal lake and back on his Sport Demons. Both are good tires for the corners. Neither of us have gone to the edge (we have Chicken strips). I ran Lasertecs on my 86 CBR 600 with no issues. That was my $0.02. Back your regular programming.

I second the motion for the AVon AV45 -- I have those on my 86.

I run the AV45/46 combo on my bike.  They rock;  Handling is fantastic, and they wear exceptionally well (I just replaced my rear at 9K miles and my front looks to be good for another 2 or 3K).  As long as they're available I don't really have to think about front and rear wheel/fork/swingarm swaps, which I couldn't afford right now anyway...

Well while were on topic, what do the guys running 17" x 5.5" rear rims like to wrap them in?
Life's pretty straight without twisties.
