Squeaky front brakes.

Sorry if this has been resolved in the past, but my search could turn up the answer I'm looking for.

Condition: Rotors are smooth, no pulsation, and stop quit well, but ALWAYS squeak from the moment I apply the lever, to when it is released.
Constant, and getting to the point of being embarrassed when coming to a stop in town.

Question: What pads should I get to eliminate the noise, that still work effectively?

Looking for feedback and real world testing results.

Thanks again guys!

I am a BIG fan of Yamaha OEM brake pads.  They do not squeak or squeal - and stop very well.  Longevity is good too.  Of course they are harder to actually get - you have to go to the parts counter at your local Yamaha dealer - and chances are that they WILL NOT have them in stock.  So you will have to order them.  Whereas you can pick up any number of EBC, etc. pads EVERYWHERE all day long (this is what they will try to sell you instead).  Some things are worth the wait.  IMHO this is one.  Many will probably disagree - but that is my .02 cents.

Leon, I use a rubber-esque anti-vibration "fluid" on the back of the brake pads to prevent this.  I do this on all my vehicles and it does  the trick.  The stuff I have I purchased at at Kragen (now Schuck's Auto Parts).  It comes in 6-8 oz semi-clear bottles, and is fluorescent orange in color.  Your auto parts man will know what you're looking for.  Obviously, put it on the non-friction side of the pad, per the directions on the bottle.

I found some on eBay a few weeks ago.  Otherwise, try boats.net or yamahasportsplaza.com.  I ordered YZF600 pads since that's where the parts were sourced.  I'd bet FZ-1 (1st gen) brake pads are the same and would work pretty good.

Leon's avatar has blue spots ...  I wasn't sure about FZ1 Gen 1 vs Gen 2 brakes.

I have 2004 FZ6 master cylinder, and
2003 R6 calipers.

Ed, is that stuff a spray or brush on material?

Leon, what pads are you using?
I tried some kevlar pads on my Seca II, and they were horrible with squeaking.
I bought EBC Sintered HH pads(R1 Gold Dot calipers) for the front of my FJ, and the don't squeak at all. They came with a perforated shim on the back of each pad. Helps to dampen some of the vibrations. I didn't need to use any of the goo that Ed refered to. We sell a number of different products of the sort at AutoZone as well though, if you want to try that route. :drinks:

Consistency is more like toothpaste than spray or brush.  I typically squeeze a bit out & use a spreader to distribute to the piston contact areas.  That'll do it  :hi:

OK, I'm home and took a picture of the stuff.  Sorry it looks so bad, but this bottle is a few years old.

Yamaha original and remember if your disks are original dont use Sintered pads.

I use a lubricant behind the pad, between the pad and the cover thingy.  They're still occasionally noisy, but it's not a squeak, it's the sound of the pad against the metal, as you'd expect.

All good info guys!
I knew I could count on getting great advice here!

Not sure what pads are on the front, still using the ones that came with the calipers.

I take it that the sintered pads kill stock rotors?
What type of rotors work with those pads?

I think I will start by taking things back apart and do an inspection.
I'll get back to this thread with my results.

Thanks for heading me in the right direction!
