Yup, this was definitely a detonation moment, not just pinging.  It was about 105 deg F out, and I was running the alleged 87 octane crap they pass off on us.  After I backed off it stopped happening.  Never happened before on the FJ and not since.
There you have it folks, Ed blamed it on the octane. No mention of the traffic blocking truck, I ran way from him..... Pull pin and toss (to the rear)......We really need a more explosive like smiley... Some TNT/plastic like stuff.......

The highest I can buy. It will run pretty good on the cheap shit.
It will run a bit better on the better stuff, but it will also run a bit cooler on the better stuff.
I experienced this in my race car this year, there were places that made us run pump gas and it ran ok but not as good as when it's got c12 mixed with 91 or 93 in it. It also ran 20ish degrees cooler with the better fuel in it.
Here in maine we have 87, 89, 91 with 10 cent jumps to go with it. So for less than a buck it gets the good stuff everytime, now and then it gets my old two smoke race gas also (it is a FJ) it is worth it to me.
Thats my 2 cents

On a really nasty hot day, there's times where I'll run a little higher.  Generally if I'm out playing, I'm moving, so cooling isn't a huge issue, and I'm in the midwest, so the humidity tends to be sky-high when it's hot--both the heat and the humidity artificially richen the mixture and keep things cooler a pinch.  In heavy traffic, if I know I'm going to be stuck all day, I'll go ahead and pay the extra.

I've found that the aki/octane of the fuel matters less than the brand, though.  BP, Mobil, and Shell all seem to be about the best you can get from the pumps around here, and some of the off-brands will run decidedly poorer.

That said, I just bought a jug of VP100, $13/gallon!  That's for the oxygenation though, not for the octane.  Just need a little more cushion to run in a 10.50 index, I can do 10.4x's but the stars have to align about perfectly.

I started running lucasoil ethanol treatment to combat the E10 soon to be E15 in my area. Try it out.
All my old carb bikes are going to get it.
Its called Safeguard..maybe its been mentioned. 1 bottle treats around 80 gal.

Thanks for the replies folks.  I think I'm just going to stick with Premium.  The added .20 a gallon isn't gonna kill me, at least not in the amounts my bike uses.  Now, I am going to keep on using regular in my truck, because with a 26 gallon tank one needs all the help you can get in saving money.
