Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT)

Good day all,
      I've seen these gizmos on the internet. They seem to be used on snowmobiles. Has anyone ever tried them on an FJ? It seems to be a good system to monitor engine temperature. Your thoughts??

I used to use them on air-cooled VW's a bunch back in the day. They worked really well in that application, and I don't see why they wouldn't work well here, but an oil temperature gage would be more intuitive.

I've been waiting for that reply, Pats right it will only freak you out. You just need to know it's real hot, almost fucking hot. That's under normal use.
Turn the motor sideways, put in a car turn it 8-10 thousand RPMs for 10 minutes at a time. Then you'll see hot, 450ish degrees head temp, 340 plus oil temp.
Your FJ shouldn't get hot enough to hurt anything.

Hey Bob, question, with the FJ motor turned sideways, do you think the cracks in the intake cams you racers are seeing is due to uneven cooling?

No, I've been told it's about on and off the gas thru the turns.
I have also seen broken cams in the bike too.
I think it is the load the engine is under, 7in tires, 1300LBS.
The bikes that I seen do this, have all been drag bikes that hooked up quit well.
I have broken pinned cams too Hank noticed it a few years back when he did the rebuild.
I never could tell when racing, glad it was pinned no DNF no bent valves.
