Brake caliper query

Hi guys new to the forums. I have a quick question (famous last words that!) mounted on the front of the front fork of my 1985 FJ1100 is what appears to be an extra hydraulic assembly of some sort. It is linked via brake hose to the caliper. It has a dial type adjuster on the bottom of it.
Above the dial a red ring is showing which concerns me somewhat.
The dial has an arrow both ways and H-L on it.There is one assembly on each fork for each caliper, both sides show the red ring.
I only have a haynes manual which does not show this assembly anywhere not even in the pics nor does it explain what it is or does.
Guess I bought the wrong manual
Can anyone explain what this is please?
And does anyone know where I can get an Aussie compliant manual from?
Cheers Jezza (FJ's are all there is!)

The "Anti-dive" adjustment is supposed to keep the front end from diving when using the front brake.

There seems to be a debate on whether or not they work very well if at all.

They don't work well enough on my 86' to notice if they work at all. I am gonna upgrade to 89 forks with emulators, super brace and when I can afford it some blue dot calipers. San Dimas Mike took his off and used blanking plates. Added weight and no gain for it.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

The mysterious Anti-Dive units only operate if you weigh under 150 lbs.  :sarcastic:

Under hard braking in corners the bike will try to stand up on you and give you the high hard one.

the simple solution is to not use your front brakes unless you are in a straight line.

The other solution is to replace your forks with 89 and later fj units , you can just use the lower tubes and this will lead to a mod of the front wheel and brakes mike was talking about.

+1 on that...I was in a low speed right hand corner (50 or 60 MPH) with 2 bikes coming the other way when a ground squirrel decided to pop out and pretend to block my path, I applied some front brake and almost stood straight up (under steer into the on coming bikes). Major sphincter moment, and after it passed, all was well, heart racing like I missed a bullet, need to upgrade to emulators.

Good day Alex - (just guessing with your forum name being Jezza), there is no such thing as an Aussie compliant manual that I am aware of. I have a Clymers manual myself, but it has some errors in it, just as the Haynes does.

Here is a site that shows a breakdown of the Anti-dive units if you require it:

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1985/FJ1100N/FRONT%20FORK/parts.html

Where are you in Aus mate?....Guessing Victoria somewhere - once again due to the forum name.

Hey thanks to all responders, got it this unit throws you off your corner, very inventive of yamaha. bet that technology never made it to the race track. So emulators I gather these are something different if anyone has any links to info on how these work I would be appreciative.I will start looking at 89 FJ12's I guess for parts.
And Harvy I am in Perth, who's Alex? I dont use pseudonyms

Harvy

My apologies Jezza........ I thought you may have been alluding to Alex Jesaulenko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Jesaulenko) with you screen name.

With regard to the anti-dive units......... they stand you up in corners under brakes no more than do non anti-dive equipped bikes.

Start here.  There's a reason why Pat pointed you to the files section, there's a fair bit of reading to do.  You could also look at the FAQ and learn a fair bit.

Funny Harvy, tell that to my broken bones after I high sided my 86 with anti-dive.

After a few mods that problem is gone.

I'm pretty sure the 16" front wheel is the cause of the bike wanting to stand up under braking.... not the anti dive units.

kookaloo!

Mark Olson

The 16" wheel may have had something to do with it.

Sorry to hear that Mark....BUT..... my statement still stands. If the anti-dive is working correctly, "stand-up" experienced under front brake application will still occur - its all in the physics of the thing.

I managed to high-side my '91 too!........ rider error given the road conditions at the time.

With all the mods in the world, if you do the wrong thing in the wrong circumstances, I dare say you could do it again. Touch wood we have both learnt from the experience.

Cheers mate

Awwwww Harvy , I was trying to blame it on the anti-dive on the fj for the crash.

It couldn't have been operator error  :wacko3:
