..... If someone in the group has a Hayes Service & Repair Manual for Yamaha FJ1100 & FJ1200.84 to 96
please turn to page 8:18 wiring diagram. [86&87 us models]

.. I have changed the FJ turn signal and the start button switches to FZ1. .... The left side, gauges and the front brake switch are done,
.. But, I am having a very difficult time with the FZ1 starter button and the kill switch... The 86 FJ starter button has four wires the FZ1 starter button has two [like the 91and up FJ's]
... On page 8:18 you can see that the blue/white wire coming from the starter relay is going to the relay unit first then to the switch and the black wire coming from the switch is going to the ingitor.

I am thinking that the red/yellow wire [the red/yellow wire is hot with the key being on] is the power for the blue wire for the dimmer switch only........... [the red/yellow and blue wires are not being used]

... The problem is, the starter button [relay] works without the key being on.
.. I have the blue/white wire coming from the starter relay, going straight to the starter button. and it's hot all the time........... There is No Relay Unit <<< is that why the switch is live all the time??

             thanks, Jeff

Jeff are you saying you removed the relay?

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Brook

..... Hi Travis,..... Yes, I removed the relay unit. But, not on purpose.
.. If I can explain, When I decided to change the handlebar controls to FZ1's, I thought it would be easy to cut the harness into at the male and female connections. and then use Mate-n-lock connectors to reconnect the FZ1 controls and the trial tech guages....... NOT.....

.. I did not look at the Hayes wiring diagram before cutting the harness.... big mistake.

Last Friday, I did install a small relay between the starter relay and the starter button. It seems to be working.
.. With ALLLL the hours that I have been working on this, the battery went died.......... Just got a new one Sat.  So, I am hoping all goes well.
.. With all the switchs and guages wired-up, thier are 13 wires from the fuse box area, that are not being used.               I am hoping that's not a bad thing. LOL

:good2: sounds like you got it working, I assume you did away with the kickstand/clutch switches?

I would seriously recommend having a copy of ALL pertinent schematics before diving into a motorcycles elect. system.
By ALL I mean the FJ's and the bike that you scavenged the controls from. They're pretty much all accessible from the internet and will give you a starting point from which to research with your multimeter.  Please tell me you started your project with a multimeter!!
