Wow :morning2: ok i will fully read it my peepers arent functioning...."Canadian Military and their experiences with shit box helicopters that eerily echo the same Australian one.
Australia has over a billion dollars worth of SeaKings quietly rusting away in a back paddock at Nowra Air Base.
The HMAS Kanimbla & Manoora are in the same boat.*"    yes and lets not forget we threw away the skyhawk... then our relly's over the ditch just gave them better avionics systems and they are still a good aircraft.... helicopters fall out of the sky any way....( i like the sea king... like the fj it has a gracefull ugliness to it).... and to klavdy... this will make intweresting reading ..... but every time i hear the word "defence" i remeber my mate i used to wok with who .. says " the armed forces arn't worth crap since they let women in.... they lengthened the training times and  softened the trainging process" ( please note these are NOT my views... and yes he did serve back int the day over at butterworth and malaya)...ok i m rambling and i got reading to do..

Kopfjaeger

so.... to sum up basically your saying that the "industry" that is described in your articles are self supporting,( in a time of severe crisis?) due to paranoia and it being a "boys club" of people in charge who are quite happy to spend money they dont have to support the idea that they may/may not be invaded but its best to be ready just in case..... and to once again spend money they dont have as opposed to putting it to something far more usefull. It was interesting to note the reporter made the statement that   " knows how to start wars and prolong them but not finish them".... seems to tie in with all i have read on major conflicts.... but who wins anyway?....whilst i may not have fully grasped the idea of the article it is good reading and im not poking  at anyone....as for not discussing it here... well.... Education and information should be free and we as a society  ( not just individual countries) should be able to get together and have a discussion on other countries, just because you dont live there, doesnt mean you cant have an opinion, it will just have to be put further into context by people who are being directly affected by it, if this were a posting about how crap the australina defence dept is  i would reply the same way.     just to add.... i have always stated that a firearm is a tool, and should be used as a tool. i love mills and lathes but i dont have one " just for fun cos i like one"   jmo

Yes - you SOLD us the Skyhawks, now more than 40 years old, and only God knows why as we never had much use for short range ground attack aircraft unless the bad people of Norfolk Island need putting down! Now we are stuck with them in mothballs and no-one wants to take them off our hands. It costs a small fortune to have them shrink wrapped and sitting on the tarmac at one of our few airbases.

As for the arguments re. us foreigners minding our own business re. US politics, don't be so narrow minded as US politics have an enormous effect on us especially little countries like NZ. You will find that we still support US military ops, we still have our crack SAS troops in Afghanistan at great expense, we still have troops in the Middle East and although our forces may be minute compared to the US commitment, for a country with a population of only 4 million it is a sizeable one. We banned nuclear ships in NZ ports many years ago under an essentially left wing government thereby keeping much of the US fleet out. Our present right-wingers would love to invite them back but the majority of the population would decline. If the US government says jump, many countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand still jump. Fortunately under our previous  regime of Helen Clarke we declined many requests for fighting forces and sent reconstruction teams, medical teams and other passive aid. The articles Mr K has provided for your titillation have obviously hit a raw nerve with some and gone over the heads of others. Such writers as Bacevich and Englehardt should be read by more Americans not just us foreigners.

Good on ya Klavdy for providing some great campfire discussion. I for one will be following your Salon as long as it is allowed to appear here.

Australia has more than its share of rabid Religious fundamentalist charlatans  along with their gormless supporters and acolytes.
These bumpkins below WANT people to die and, with their promises of votes, they are having more and more influence on Politicians and the legislation they introduce.

Separation of Church and State, is it still the case?

What are your thoughts, should legislation be influenced by Religious groups of any persuasion?

QuoteDear family and friends in Christ in Australia and around the World,

This urgent and very serious message came from the Lord at the prophetic intercessory prayer meeting today 2/2/11, at Catch the Fire Ministries Apostolic Centre in Melbourne, (Hallam), Australia.

As around 50 intercessory prayer warriors met to prayerfully seek the Lord from 10am – 2pm at our ministry and church base regarding the crisis with Cyclone Yasi (expected to hit the North Eastern part of Queensland sometime soon), we were burdened with the ferocity and possible destruction of peoples lives, livelihoods, devastation of land, homes, and the intense repercussions this will have on our nation of Australia.

We worshipped the Lord in His holiness and then began to pray on our knees before the Lord around the map of Australia. Many prayed and began to beseech (cry out to) the Lord for this situation. As this happened, it became apparent that God was speaking and making His voice heard and Pastor Daniel began weeping and physically struggling as others prayed. Almost overcome, he shared the following with those God had gathered to pray, "God will not allow me to pray for the cyclone not to happen (for His protection) as He is making it clear to me that this is to happen... many will look to Him in their time of need and know Him. Hearts will become softened by the situation and many will cry out and know His salvation."

Pr Daniel went on to state, ' God just reminded me of the people of God how they refused to go to the promised land and were planning to stone Moses, Caleb & Joshua. They then wanted to elect a leader and go back to Egypt. How God wanted to lift His protection off them, so that they may be destroyed, but Moses got in the way and pleaded with God to protect them. God did protect them, but they never entered the promised land (Numbers 14 ).

We read in 1 Kings 19 : 11-13 that God spoke to Elijah. There was a wind, then an earthquake and then the fire, but God was not in the wind, nor the fire nor the earthquake. After these things passed by there came a gentle whisper and God spoke to him, for He was in the gentle whisper.

I believe that God is going to let this disaster come upon our nation, so that people will turn back to God. This is hard, as I am weeping inside me with great pain thinking of what is going to happen, but I just cannot pray for protection, as God is not letting me do so. All I can say is pray for souls to be saved and repent on behalf of our nation'.

As the team heard this a 'holy hush' came upon those gathered and most wept before the Lord as they sensed the gravity of what this would mean, and then many others confirmed that they too received the same word from the Lord.

We believe God is permitting this shaking to take place in our nation, and allowing the devil to do his dirty work, so that we Aussies will come back to the Lord Jesus Christ and seek His face day and night in prayer and fasting. Definitely the shaking of our nation is for good. Even though it might seem like satan is having a field day, we need to always remember that it is only through great testing that great testimonies are birthed for the increase of the Kingdom and glory of God!

Pr Daniel then said, ' In the natural every part of me says " Lord please protect Australia", but through the Spirit of the Lord I know He wants me not pray this way, but to pray that the nation will walk into her God given destiny, and not miss out on God's best for them as the people of God did who came out of Egypt. I pray that we will all come back on our knees to Jesus and fulfill the great promise bestowed upon our nation as the 'Great South Land of the Holy Spirit'.

We are all praying for God's will to be done.

I looked hard but I couldn't see you in the congregation...

Let's resurrect Henry VIII as the best ever Head of State so we can keep jumping ship to the most favourable Church. When it's raining hard we'll go with these guys and when the sun's out we'll start our own Church of the Everlasting Sunshine where the congregation will be expected to lie naked in the sun while contemplating the infinite possibilities of what to do on a warm dry afternoon for which we must be truly thankful.

Amen

FREEDOMS ERODED,TAKEN AWAY, BUT IT'S O.K, IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN

Hopefully no one here would in any way, shape or form condone child pornography but FMD, the Govts of the world can take some liberties ,fuck things up completely when it suits them and cover it all with the sweeping statement that "Its for the CHILDREN!"

"Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change."

Klavdy, It appears that you can't tell the difference between someone that disagrees with their government and someone who wants to kill you AND kill your government.
In spite of all the rhetoric thrown about that Tea party folks hate the President etc, I don't think you will find any Tea Party types trying to blow up buildings, airplanes, ex-presidents or anything or anyone else.  Unless I've missed the news coverage.

Cabin fever HAS set in, FWIW.
