Soft Saddle Bags

I have the same Yamaha saddlebags as Marshman.  Previously, I was using Ortlieb bags from Aerostitch.  The were too-big-looking (start jokes now) on the FJ...better the the wife's cruiser style bike.  I got my Yami bags at a yardsale for $20.  I like em.

so I had to go look closer at my saddlebags. Marsh, yours are definitely bigger.

Mike, I get that a lot...   :empathy3:    :rofl2:

I figured somebody else would bring up dick size long before now.

The "yours are" combined with dick size implies plural penii. This brings frightening new dimensions to the discussion.

I thought this was about who's bag is bigger?

Actually, it started out as asses on seats and backrests and grew to a bag comparison. I would seem that, as the Alpha here, Marsh White has a really big bag(s), but most of us don't feel inferior; some of us don't have a bag(s) at all.

Regarding plural penii, it reminds me of a racist joke:

Did you year about the Hispanic gentlemen who had two penises? It got confusing, so he had to name them. The first one (his favorite) he called José.

The other? That one is Hose "B".

There are several FJ owners running with Hepco Becker bags from Germany. Great quality and they still make racks for the FJ's. I also added a cheap ass JC Shitley top case that has since been replaced with a Hepco Becker top case..

Hope this helps..

Mike, the ones Marsh has were marketed for use with the FJ.

The ones you have were pictured with the FZR, with the Yamaha branded Corbin seat for the FZR.

All nice equipment, IMO...

Not that I doubt you, Randy, and Der Krug Milsch knows that I have yet to see these bags on my bike, but I swear that this clown on flea-bay is selling Yamaha banners with these bags on an FJ1200 ABS very much like mine. I was going to illegally post the photo from flea-bay, but I'll just post a link to it instead:

Enlarge the picture. That's what I'm hoping mine look like when installed, except that I have a Givi box and I want to mount this thing backwards.

One of the guys I used to run around with worked (actually he's still there) at the local Yamaha dealer, so I spent a lot of time there.

All the brochures that they had back in the day showed the bigger bags on an FJ, and the smaller ones on an FZR1000.

I have no doubt that they could be used on the FJ just fine, that's just how they had them pictured.

FWIW, I have a set of Nelson Riggs soft bags that have worked great on the FJ, the CBR1K, and now the Gixxer.  I have seen posts here of folks that had to fabricate brackets to keep their soft bags from drooping, and these bags do not droop at all.  The strap that connects the two drapes across the seat and is adjustable in width via a boat load of velcro on each strap.  if adjusted propery, -only have to do this once for a given bike, and it's easy, then the bags can hold a lot of weight and not droop one bit.  They came with rain covers, and they were not that expensive, I think I paid $85 a few years back, they are $104 now.

The capacity is not huge but I can do 5 days on the road, with the sleeping bag in one and a few other items stuffed in there as well and the other with clothes and toiletries, and a bottle of mescal with no problem. If I strap the tent to the seat, and put a meal ot two's worth of food in my smallish tank bag, I'm fairly self sufficient. For me, that's are all I need.  I really like them.

Here's what I have:

You know, posting this got me thinking.  One of the zippers had pulled away -maybe 1" on one of the bags.  I did take a needle and thread to it to keep it from getting worse, and had thought little of it until just now.  So, just for giggles, having been reminded of them by the above, I called them to see what the warrentee was. It was lifetime.  They immediately gave me a a ruturn authorization number told me to send them back, and they will send me a new set.  No questions asked.

I think I like their customer service as well.  I'll report back.

Dan

Just a follow-up.  The brand new bags arrived today.  An identical (but new) replacement for the set described above.   A mere 2.5 weeks after I sent the 'defective' -if you can call it that, set back to them.

I am really impressed with Nelson Rigg. They were professional, courteous, and had a quick turn-around.  Their customer service could not have been better.  I will buy from these folks again, and recommend them to anyone that asks.

No affiliation, just passing along a happy ending.

Dan

It's been a while since anyone has replied to this post but I have a question for Marsh. I have those exact bags (guy gave em to me with the bike) but I can't seem to get them on the bike in a way that seems reasonable. do you have a luggage holder for them or are they hanging all willy nilly? also do they allow for a passenger to sit on the back? I'm trying to find a luggage option for the misses & I but I can't seem to make those Yamaha bags work for me.
