I have owned my '86 1200 since i bought as a crashed wreck in '89. I rebuilt the bike which has since got several sensible mods such as a Wiseco 1314 kit, Thundercat wheels, KTM Duke projector headlights, Dynojet stage one/KN filter, Öhlins shock absorber and progressive fork springs, Telefix fork brace, FJR clutch spring, braided brake hoses, fairing mounted mirrors, heated grips and an extra Odyssey battery in the rear cowl to aid starting.
The engine pulls from 1000 rpm and the bike is a pleasure to ride.

That's a BEAUTY!
Tell us about the KTM Duke projector headlights, how you mounted ad moulded the surround, cool pic, SPARKS!
Oh, the mirrors, what are they?

I mounted the KTM lamps on an aluminum plate that I fitted to the original headlamp mount so I still can use the beam height regulator knob. I made a mould from GRP that fit around the lenses (lot of work) and had the whole thing painted in Ducati Monster Dark. The mirrors are ordinary car accessory items with LED direction indicators and are placed in a position that gives rearward wiew at hip height (which still is the narrowest part of my 60 years old body  :) )
Riding season has just started in Norway - I am really looking forward to my 20th year on my favorite bike.

Norske Huh?
Wow, we hear that you have fabulous roads with a really strict police force that enforces unbelievable penalties (income based) for speeding.
Unconditional Gaol time for speeding 40KMH over?

Second that...awesome job on the FJ!!  Great pic!   :good2:   You're such a tease...   Since day 1, I thought that the square headlight made my 89 look dated...   I've grown used to it now, but I love what you did there.  I've also been forever fascinated with mirror options...yours look good.  How well do they work?  Obviously no elbows in the picture, but besides that, is the view improved?  Please post more pics and more details as you have the time!

Yup, the mirrors work much better than the original ones. No shoulders or elbows in the wiev, just the handlebar ends.
And yes, the speeding fines are incredibly expensive in Norway. Fortunately I have a racetrack just a few miles away whre I can do my speeding (avatar pic).

I have also raised the gearing by fitting an 18t front sprocket. Honda CBX750 or CBX1000 sprockets fit OK.

I used to have big problems cranking the engine when hot until I fitted a four brush FJR1300 starter. Problem is now totally cured; the engine starts easily even with the lights on.

Judging by your Avatar pic - it would seem that they let you keep the mirrors on while on the track?  They don't let you do that here in the states - Or do you just have to tape them up?  No tape on the headlights I see either...

Well now...That's a little nugget of info. I did not know. FJR1300 starters compatable with our FJ's?  Hmmm
Does everyone know this but me?  Figures.  I gotta hang out here more often. Thanks Jon

I didn't know that either Pat.  Very interesting bit of information.  Sounds like a worthwhile purchase.  :)

i'm thinking it was a mis-type.... and was supposed to read XJR1300.... of which yes the starter will work on the FJ

Indeed it was a mis-type - the starter is of course an XJR item  :dash2: (or from a late FJ1200, I am not sure - I bought it on ebay from a breaker i Britain). It sure made a big difference, anyway.  The old two brush starter sometimes refused to crank until the engine had cooled a bit.

Marsh, on track days no mirrors or lights are allowed in Norway neither. The pic was taken during a rider training course when no such rules apply.
