No affiliation, but I just saw these folks on C/L and it sounds interesting.

I wonder if their repairs are any good.

The posting has since been deleted.  I live the the Philly area - what was the listing for?  Perhaps I can investigate another avenue to a usable supplier for the group.

As a budget fix, I managed to aquire some electrical plastic type epoxy, I used to use the 'ol plastibond but this is  MUCH stronger, is workable, and has a short curing time, ...... hang on....its called " TSC Epoxy sealing compound" comes in a 5 oz tube, working life is aprox 30 mins...and wow ... if you read the instructions, theres an address.... "cooper house industries inc. Crouse hinds division, PO box 4999 Syracuse NEW YORK 13221 " they use it for connections on underground miners and MH 55 and the such, can handle high temp etc dries greenish , my belly pan is split so im putting it back together, will put up pics when i do em, but thus far i have put the L/H side back on and when it dried i could pick it up by the broken piece and hold the rest of the fairing upright without any cracking noise  will have to sand of caourse and am also thinking of putting a bit of that aluminium Gaffa tape that i have for heat maybe.... its a thought.... i think ive thunk to much i need coffee....
cheers... hope it helps.

It was a soup to nuts plastic repair service that showed fairly complicated looking BMW faring missing a ~6" hole right on a compound-convex corner they repaired and re-painted to look factory fresh.  The pics looked good, and they claimed it was "cheaper than replacing the plastic from the manufacturer".

Anyhow, Cameron, where in the Philly area do you live -I'm in Thornton, south of West Chester -near Glen Mills -You?  FYI, I no longer have the mighty FJ, it burned down to essentially nothing, just up the street from my house...  I now ride a torture-device GSXR750 that I have done lots to try and 'soften' but not been all that successful...

Let me know.

ok i still havnt finished it and it looks rough... but the pics show me holding it and it doesnt flex or crack.... actually the white stuff near my hand is from a previous fix that i didnt do....and it flexes more than the stuff i put on. its pretty good stuff thus far............ as i said its a bit rough. still needs to be filed and sanded and maybe some heat tape to be sure. and spending to much time not riding the damn thing has made this happen

Not to Hijack this thread but....Dan, you say your FJ burned to the ground?  What happened there?

My black 90 mysteriously spontaneously combusted in my garage and burned our whole house down.  A forensics lab looked the poor old girl over and couldn't find the cause.

Craig-

That is a one-up for sure -you're whole house?!  Sucks, sorry to hear it.  When did that happen?  Hope everyone was OK.  Anyway to answer you question:  See this thread:  http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=786.msg5992#msg5992

A bit more detail here:

Really was a shame.  Hopefully others will learn from it.

I'll say it again:  TWIST TIE/ REPLACE THOSE ELBOW FITTINGS "outlets" folks, failure to do so can be literally catastrophic.

Dan,

Happened in March 2008.  Cool evening, bike had not been run for about a week.  Wife went in the garage and screamed that my bike was on fire.  When I got out to the garage, the whole gas tank and upper fairing was engulfed in flames.  I just told her to get away from the house as I thought it would explode, which, after the tank ruptured, the whole garage burst into flames.  Everyone got out ok.  High drama to be sure.

Afterwards, I posted on the Yahoo site asking if anyone had their FJs catch fire.  I think you were mentioned.

Cheers,

that looks a lot like the fix I did on mine using JB weld, looks plenty strong. that should work out good.
except for that last picture though, I don't think anything can fix that.

I'm in Lafayette Hill, about a mile north and west of Philly border.  Closest well-known thing around is the Plymouth-Meeting mall and where the East-West PA turnpike meets the Northeast extension.  My wife is originally from Downingtown/West Chester area and we're often out that way - though not usually on two-wheels.

Small world, eh?
