2010 Camaro SS Dilemma

Not bike related, but what do you do when your wonderful wife (and mother of your 6 children) says she REALLY loves the 2010 Camaro SS, and she would like to get one with a 6-speed transmission? :flag_of_truce:

My (then) GF did that several years ago, a bright red one, with a V-8 and 5 speed, to replace her Ford econobox.

After 3 speeding tix in the first 6 months, she wanted to drive my dark blue Honda Prelude, which meant I had to drive the Camaro...      :biggrin:

a 2010 Camaro SS in Hungary????? Oh well you could alway nip over to Transfagarasan Highway in Romania, she in the Camero and you on the FJ then switch on the way back.

I am certainly blessed to have a wife that prefers a manual shift over an automatic! Realistically I would save my money and when I [eventually] move back to the U.S., I would just pay cash for it. I was told if I ship a car over here it would cost me about $4,000 in import/registration costs. Interesting that both the stock Camaro SS and my FJ have the exact same 1/4 mile times.
And we all know how hard our FJ's pull in a launch. :good2:

uuuuuh, that's news to me.....I didn't know the Slomaros could turn a 11 second 1/4 mile.

IIRC Back in '84 Gleason got the FJ to turn a 10.8...but that's not reality.

What is reality ?
Stock 1100 or 1200 with an average rider in the 1/4 ?

Actually, for a corrected time and a 130lb rider, it's probably right close.

For comparison, the magazines listed the 90 model as a 11.03 bike in the quarter mile.  This was with a 102rwhp dyno number.  After putting on the V&H SS2R pipe, K&N pods, and rejetting accordingly, most dyno printouts I've seen indicate that it's kinda a crap setup and only gains about 5-6rwhp (so 108ish with stg3 stuff).  With me and my 90lb-heavier-than-Gleason ass riding and it lowered (so that I can launch nearly as well as the professional can on a stock setup), the bike went 10.9's.  Remember that the 6hp difference doesn't offset the 90lbs, not by a long shot.  Correct my time for the altitude at the time (DA was around 2000 feet) and it's a 10.6 run.  Arguably you could skip correcting the DA and just find a track on the coast with good air (best air I've raced in was an amazing -350 feet!  Corrected times would be a lot slower that day!)

For an honest, uncorrected, bone stock FJ with a 150lb rider on a comfortably cool day, high 10s are totally reasonable, assuming they're comfortable launching and keeping it right on the limit.

The car mags are even funnier though, some have been known to prep the cars a bit (icing the intake, race oil, removing the spare + other weight, super-duper track prep, etc).  Did a quick look at the 2010 camaro SS in showroom stock condition seems to be capable of 12.50's at best.

You have to throw out "average" rider and "average" driver in both cases though, doubly so on the street.  An "average" driver in a big RWD car will just torch the tires and go nowhere fast.  An "average" rider will launch very softly after using too many revs, too much clutch, and not enough throttle, getting a snap wheelie at best and then a soggy run afterwards.  On the track, it's about the same, the rider will be lucky to crack into the 11s range and the car will complain about traction even on a glued track.

Pretty cool car though!  Be a little careful, research a bit.  I believe that's the car that I saw at the track absolutely grenade a transmission, don't know if it was a slushbox or a stir-your-own trans though, and judging by the times it ran before it blew it had a pretty serious power adder under it (either a good NO2 hit or a blower, honestly I didn't look at it very well so I don't recall... but it was in the mid/low 11s range I believe).

I would like to try a pass or two just to see how slow I am.It would be cool to get 4 or 5 fj's to show up and grudge race.

Better find her a Sugar Daddy! That car should keep you pretty safe from any complaints about the FJ though. Good luck with it!

About the 1/4 mile times... Sorry I thought you guys would key up on the phrase, "MY FJ." Plus I am a somewhat inexperienced drag racer, and my bike is a stock 1988 model. It pulls hard, but it won't set records. I was in the 12's just as the Camaro is. :pardon:

Nice car....wish they were available in Australia. They were designed here and use some of the underpinnings from the aussie Holden which was sold in the states as the Pontiac G8 for a while. I've heard that that the G8 is coming back to the states as a 4 door performance chevrolet soon.
