i think i have it. i dislike mods i tend to think that there are a lot of little people in white coats that know there stuff so i dont have to tinker. but no. i was wrong. ive got it nutted to the fact that the fj has such pleasing lines and there really is nothing iwant to need to fix on it bar minor and major!!! running repairs. i DO however have the mod bug for the gsx 750 es. it is hideous, i liked it bought it and ( yesterday) got it running  :yahoo:. long rake , sticks for front suspension, fonzy handlebars, square headlight.... yuk yuk yuk, thinking, tacho and speedo, 3 lights in between ( oil sidestand and neutral) and a single round 70's style headlight, new headers and then onto those sh*t house front forks. i know know its not an fj..... just wanted to share that i may have seen some light.... :flag_of_truce:

All vehicles designed for use on public roads contain compromises.  Motorcycle designers are forced to accept some of these compromises as well.  Plus you occasionally have significant improvements in various parts of vehicles.
Almost all the mods that are frequently performed on the FJ are in keeping with the original design brief and serve to maintain the performance of the FJ in light of modern motorcycle design.
Look at the common mods - wheel changes so modern low profile radial tires can be used, change of brake calipers and master cylinder to improve the feel and ease of use of the brakes, changes to the suspension to replace worn components with current design bits.  All of these mods do not change the substance or character of the bike or its design, but improve its performance in various areas.
Other mods are undertaken to more sharply focus the nature of the bike to perform better in a narrow portion of the performance envelope.  These mods include lengthened swingarms, significant changes to suspension, and engine output especially for drag racing performance.
While I wouldn't argue with your choice to maintain the bike as originally delivered, I see no reason to deny those who choose to improve the bike while maintaininig the character it has.

And once you've experienced how well the FJ fits the wide UJM brief - every other UJM comes up short.  So, of course you see the need to mod your GSX.

Cheers,
Arnie

........ ole school, new school !!!
.. Everyone has thier own thoughts on,......to mod. or not to mod. .....

I really like the power and the feel of my FJ. and I really like the look of the R1.
..... With all the aftermarket parts,....the wheels, brakes, swingarm, forks, fan are all Yamaha.... that's what I feel, should stay the same... ALL YAMAHA.

... I can see why, some would like to keep FJ's >> all FJ.

.. They should make it illegal, to put a chevy motor in a Mustang.

Or a Ford rear end in a Chevy

Many people have found the fj in stock form enough for them , these are fj purists and there is nothing wrong with that.

I found my 86 fj to be great in the straights but lacking in the twists. The front end felt dead and the brakes sucked and caused stand ups in corners and overruns in turns.

So I was forced to change my riding style to compensate for the fj quirks. After a few minor modifications , the fj is now great for my riding style .

If you are happy with how your fj rides ,leave it alone , If you want more then get your" mod on". Nothing wrong with making a great bike "mo better".

Even a diehard purist I know is currently doing a 17" wheel mod to his fj. even though he hangs out on yahoo and loves bias ply tires. (seems radials are cheaper now). :wacko3:
