Yes I figured there would be confusion there, that is why I asked "which generation FJ" in the poll
The 3rd generation was released in 88. even though Lotsokids claims he has an 88 it is identical (including color scheme)
to the 87' FJ. so one could assume he knows it is Gen 2  Not Gen 3.

Lotsokids, if you don't mind. could you tell me what the tenth digit of your vin number is?

oh come on now , we all know the 86 is the most beautiful fj there is. :pardon:

The results don't seem to agree with this, so far anyways.

But your '88 is 2nd Gen. Not 3rd, sorry  :empathy3:
The survey has the 88' in gen 3 category, may be misleading to some....Aside from color it is just as perfect as the 86/87. But the Black and Red does look good our bikes as well.

Maybe in some parts of the world it seems, but the '88s supplied to the Great White North are exactly like the '89s supplied to the US.

I guess we can consider them to be the 88' and 88.5'?
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

'86 Ambulance - Bent frame, cracked case, due for an overhaul
'89 Stormy Blue - Suits my Dark Side

Firehawk068

Maybe this could be tracked down to a "Production Date" Where the early '88's were 2nd Gen, and the later '88's were 3rd Gen.
All those of you that own '88 models, could post up a picture of your bike stock, and the date of manufacture....
Being in the auto parts business for many years, I have seen many car makers change something mid-year.(Ford is notorious for this) where you need to know the build date to look up the correct parts......
Could've been in play at Yamaha in 1988. :scratch_one-s_head:

Yes, mine is identical to an '87 (Gen 2). It was a little bit of a challenge when I started buying parts for it. Most internet parts sites don't even list a 1988 at all. So for purposes such as buying parts, I consider it a 1987.

10th digit on the VIN is........ there is no 10th digit. I just looked and I only have 9.

Something is not right here... modern VINs have 17 characters.

You didn't confuse the motor number with the V.I.N. number did you?

I know; stupid question, but I have to ask.

No problem. I checked my title, the frame, and the engine. They all match with a 9 digit number. I knew '88s were goofy...

The 17 digit code was not implemented around the world at the same time.  I believe a lot of markets including the Japanese home market kept the manufacturer's old vin system well into the 90's.
