Ray,

Thanks for that.  I am going to do the same mod on my 90 sometime this month.  Your post could not have come at a better time.

Just a quick question.  Where in the wheel pack did you place the washers?  From the pics, I see them both on the brake caliper side, one inboard and one out.  Is that correct?

Thanks again for the pics.  Looks great!!!!

Hey there Craig.

Yep I used 4 s/steel washers, each 2mm thick. To get the chain aligned etc, I put 2 each side, between the caliper mount/swingarm, and the other side between hub/swingarm. Hope that makes sense. I also regeared the bike because the sprocket that comes off the GSX-Rs is in most cases way too low, so I went to the local Suzuki place and bought a 39T rear from memory. If I kept the original sprocket that came with the Suzuki wheel the FJ would have been screaming doing only 100kmr.

I did find a fantastic excel spreadsheet that lets you put in different sprocket ratios and it gives you speed/rpm ranges for your bike. Its on my computer here somewhere. Good luck with the wheel swap, if I can do it anyone can,  :good2:

I count 38 in the pics you posted. It looked smaller, I just had to know! Good job on the focus and resolution.

X-Ray

You're right, I went back and counted, 38T!,

Thanks Doug  :good2:

Hmmm,

I wonder why my FJ has a 40 tooth sprocket?  I bought a 40 tooth to mount on my GSXR wheel as well.  BTW, I show about 85mph at 5K.  What are you reading at 5000RPM?

The road ahead!
It will be a few months before I can answer the MPH question with my 18/38 setup. Winter and all you see. You warm weather people suck, in case you were too busy riding to notice.

Craig..... according to the Gearing commander web site as listed in the files section (http://www.gearingcommander.com), 5000RPM makes 144KPH with 18/38 sprockets and 180x55/17 tyre.

FJZ1 1200 - It'll do me just fine.
Timing has much to do with the success of a rain dance.

I use an 18/40 combination on mine, but with a 170/60 tyre.  Haven't really taken much notice of speed at 5000RPM.

Bill.
Sold it!

Thanks Harv, thats the spreadsheet I was trying to find!

Yep, 84.5 MPH, that's about right.  Thanks for the spreadsheet, Harvey.

Well I finally did it.  I installed the Gixxer wheel on the old gal yesterday and got to take her for a little spin this morning.  And WOW what difference.  The bike is a whole lot less twitchy, feels really planted.  As it's a brand new tire, I didn't take her thru the paces just yet.  But I am amazed at how much better the ride is.

Now, dogbones, as my tire is way up in the air when on the centerstand.  I am not sure how much ground clearance has been lost, but I am sure that hard parts are going to hit the pavement a lot sooner.

Oh, and another thing.  What the hell to do w/ the old 16" wheel?????

Thanks to everyone that posted on this mod.  It was pretty easy to do once you got all the parts together.  So much so that I went from mock up to just installing it.  Piece of cake!!!

Cheers,

Do what most of us have done and put it in the corner, just in case :-)

For your dogbone length, you can put the bike on the centerstand on a level piece of floor, put a piece of  wood underneath the rear tire (3/4" or so) and then remove your stock dogbones.  Now measure the distance between the dogbone bolt centers.  Make up some new dogbones with the holes that distance apart.
Note: Clamp the dogbone blanks together before drilling so the holes are exactly the same distance apart.

Cheers,
Arnie

X-Ray

Yep, as Arnie said, stick it in the corner. Only thing is mines sitting in the corner with a near new tyre on it,  :dash2:

Glad it went well for you  :good2:

Ok, guys, with all the expert modders out there, there has got to be something constructive to do with all these discarded wheels.  Get them all together out on route 66 and make a tourist trap out of them.  Hey, if they will come to look at half burried caddies and the worlds largest ball of string, they will come to see the tower of old FJ wheels.   :wacko3:
