Great advice. Thank you.
No idea what brand of clutch parts are inside, as I have never been in there....yet. I have the slave rebuild kit coming and will give that a try first. If that does't help then I will have to dig deeper ......reluctantly.
I'm doing a very thorough bleed on the system, several times but is there anything specific I need to do?
Do not argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Easiest way I have found to bleed the slave is to reverse bleed it. I have a big honkin syringe I picked up at the local autopart store. Bleed the system from the bottom up. It forces the bubbles up and out easier. Just be careful to push the fluid slowly, very slowly, as it will squirt fluid out the master all over the place.DAMHIK.. :bad:
I cover everything in a big towel while doing this.
This method is much faster and usually gets all the air out in the first try.

sounds like you got it figured out . I have only one thing to add , your clutch lines (the hydraulic hoses) can swell with age and take away your clutch effectiveness . These lines are supposed to be replaced every two years per the manual. Yeah I know nobody does it but it is a good excuse to put braided stainless steel lines on your bike.

I have one of those big syringes from injecting turkeys for Thanksgiving that I could use.  Good idea. I will give that a try after my rebuild of the slave.

Just as long as you don't re-use it on the turkey after you're done with the brake fluid.  Not 100% sure, it couldn't be cleaned, but I would not take a chance.  This sure seems like one of those news stories whereby an entire family get food poisoning after an otherwise sumptuous T-Giving dinner....

No worries. It had been deemed an official garage tool for eternity now. Although I would bet the brake fluid would make the meat really tender. Should I use DOT 3 or 4 for the best effect?

Bob-

I recognize you could very well be joking, (bigger breasts) -ha ha.  But on a serious note, DOT5 will I believe, require you to completely drain, and possible rinse? the old fluid out as they are not compatible -maybe even replace o-rings or some such?  I'm pretty sure that it's not exactly straight forward to make the switch.

I am 99% sure it's a fairly big no no to mix them.

Someone check me on the switch-over procedure please?

You're correct, Dan.   :good:

DOT 3 and 4 are glycol based, as is DOT 5.1.

DOT 5 is silicone based, and is not compatible with any of the others.

I followed the instructions in a Motorcyclist article several years ago when I went to DOT 5.  They recommended simply draining the system, and thoroughly flushing it with contact cleaner.  It worked okay for me, YMMV.

I was just using the DOT 5 (silicone) reference as a joke.

I'm doing the slave cylinder as well, ordering a kit from Randy.  His prices are half of local prices here in Aus, even with postage included.
I'm having trouble finding neutral, and a bit of downshift as well.

I will be using this webpage to do it properly.

Bill.

Sold it!

Bill........ looking at the site you posted in the previous msg.......that's an interesting frame that FJ motor is sitting in. (the first pic on the rhs of the page).

He forgets to mention......... "don't start the bike with the slave removed".
