Hi all .I am a new member and have been reading up on all the posts ,a wonderful forum with a wealth of info.I came across a 84 fj and need some help. The signal lights and brake light stopped working. Before i get into buying parts i dont need i thought i might ask for help to troubleshoot the problem.. Are the signals and the brake connected. Thanks any help is greatly appreciated

Yes.

Check the fuse/trace the wiring before you go blindly throwing money at parts.

welcome to the group!

yes .... having a wiring schematic is gonna help out a lot but first off check your fuses under the seat.

Welcome  :hi:

fuse sounds blown , you  may have a wiring short.

little wonder the bike ran at all .. the fuses are replaced three to the left of the instrument panel not the problem. After stripping the bike to get better access i found All wires were cut off and taped back together in a massive mess .. they came apart with the littlest of pressure. Two hours spent soldering and shrinkwrapping not done yet but i think a greater problem may have been averted. Thanks for the info. Dave

good to hear you found the problem before it left you stranded.

it is always a good idea to  keep a record of your repairs and modifications just in case you forget :mail1:

wow this bike's wiring was butchered and i think i know why .. looks like it was burned . but after hours of stripping the wiring everything went back together good, and the signals and brake light works fine now. I need to replace the wire running from the generator back to the battery it is fried. Two orange wires  anyone know what gauge this wire is or is it ok to just match it to a similar wire. thanks again.

you may want to contact Randy at RPM for a new voltage regulator..... the stock ones are notorious for overcharging and if (when) one fails it can let some serious voltage into the battery and wiring harness.... over 16 volts will melt the heck out of the wiring and the battery.

its very easy to swap out and will definitely do the job of controlling the voltage.
