Emgo - Ken Sean mirror issues

Hi Everybody,

While there is some controversy it seems that a number of guys have found the Emgo or Ken Sean mirrors to work adequately if one  (like Me ) is pinching pennies.  General wisdom on the forum indicates that the two brands are actually the identical item. So... I ordered a  set of Emgos from Dennis Kirk and can't seem to get them to work on my 87 FJ.  The base plate can easily be attached to the existing mirror mount threaded holes in the fairing, but the mirrors run out of travel way before they can be brought horizontal enough and in enough to be usable. At their furthest down and in position I get a great view of what is about 50 yards above and to the side of the road! Great if one is being chased by a helicopter but not much else.  If I built up a wedge that was about 3/4 inch at the lower edge closest to the bike centerline and tapered to nothing at the upper outer edge that would tilt the Emgo base plate to put the mirror in the right position, but look lousy because it wouldn't be covered by the boot.
I'm sure there must be a solution like grinding away or bending something on the mirror but before I do that I want to see what input I can get from those who have done the install on an 87 model.  I notice that a couple of installs have mounted them on the windscreen but I definitely don't want to drill holes.

Thanks in Advance

I have a 86, and those mirrors suck they can only work on 84-85. But they are VERY brittle.
I used  the stock 84-85 mirror and took the base off and mounted it to the stock mounts, 86-current to the out side they work well. Can see as well as stock mirrors.
I will try to post a picture, aftermarket mirrors are cheap and the do make a 84-85 replacement.
Hope this helps

Do you have the bases  you took off.If you do I would like to buy them from you.I have a set of mirrors on my 1985 that need bases.I bought a set of emgo mirrors that mount on my handlebars that work good.I would rather have them on the fairing my bars vibrate a lot.I need some bar weights/ends.

Hey Flying Scotsman, I have an 86' so we have the same shape plastic and I am looking for improved mirrors as well. Simi Ed has put mirrors on his 89' and they look good and show less elbow. I saw his bike up close first hand during a ride many months ago. They look they might work the 86/87 bikes. You need to keep the FJ base, grind some metal off the base to get the Honda stems to fit. At the moment finances are tight and I can barley afford to put air in my tires so I have not pulled the trigger. Below is a clip of his post from the Yahoo club site. Let me know if you try this and the mirrors work.

Re: [yamahafj] Re: 86-87 Mirror question

I put CBR mirrors on my '89. Much better view, except of my elbows! I
can still see em', but not as well as before ;-) It took a minor bit of
fitting on the zinc mirror base, below the boot.
