Question about compatible carburetors...

Hello guys,
I have someone that has an 89' FJ1200 and he had the carbs off the bike for maintenence and during a move out of state the carbs became lost somehow.  :dash2:
Will 86' FJ1200 carbs work on an 89' FJ1200 without any modifications?
Are there numbers/letters on the sides of every set of carbs to confirm it's year?  :pardon:
Thanks!

Dean.
I think the needles and seats are different from the two years. The 89 has a fuel pump and earlier gen's were a gravity feed. Am not sure of any other differences.

Randy carries (or can get) new needles and seats - probably not a bad idea to replace them anyway.  Also a great time to add David Raforth's carb screw/o-ring kit while you're at it!

Dean,

No, they will not interchange. As already mentioned the gravity feed 86 carbs have a dual inlet and larger 2.3mm float needle seats. The 89 has a single inlet and 1.5mm float needle seats.

The 86 carbs cannot be broken down to accept the single center inlet as the carb bodies were not machined for any type of fitting.

I have a brand new set that will bolt right to the 89 on sitting here on my shelf for $400.00 and then he will have a solid foundation to start with instead of trying to find a good, used set of carbs.

I cannot answer about the carb numbers to try and verify year.
